Did you know who Ed Cunningham is? Probably not. Cunningham, a college football analyst for ESPN, was unknown to all but hardcore football fans. But by tying himself closely to a politically correct cause – in this case, resigning his position Wednesday, in a protest over concussions in football – he is guaranteed fawning media coverage. The New York Times is leading the Cunningham canonization.
With the new college football season for most teams starting this weekend, the resignation seems timed for maximum attention. But the politically correct movement seems much more focused on opposing what is uniquely American than where players actually face the greatest risks of concussion.
In college, women's soccer has a higher rate of concussions than men's football or soccer: 6.3 per 10,000 times women participate in soccer practice or a game versus 4.9 for men's soccer and 6.1 for men's football. Men's wrestling and hockey have even higher rates at 12.4 and 8.4 respectively.
But concussions aren't the only problem. In total injuries, men’s wrestling and hockey have even higher rates at 12.4 and 8.4 respectively.both men's and women's soccer exceed men's football. The total injury rate is 11.14 per 10,000 athletic exposures for men's soccer and 9.7 for women's soccer. For football, it is 9.5 per 10,000.
But concussions aren't the only problem. In total injuries, both men's and women's soccer exceed those of men's football. Total injuries for men's soccer are 11.14 per 10,000 practices or games and 9.7 for women's soccer. For football, the number is 9.5.
College sports are about twice as likely as high school sports to result in concussions. At the high school level, the numbers for soccer aren't quite as bad as for football. High school football is the riskiest. But girls' and boys' . . .

Football is where the money is.... Trial attorneys don’t want to stop it but they do want to prosper from it. The problem will be when they start going after school districts for money. Then the golden goose dies a slow death
They want to take our all male football to emasculate our people, They will NOT do so.
Other countries play hockey as well as US. The dreaded Russians for one. American football isn’t played anywhere else as far as I know.
Plus in rugby you have little equipment that can be used as a weapon, like the helmet. And rugby seems to be seriously concerned about the concussions that might occur, requiring mandatory checks any time a player might have possibly had “his bell rung”. They also are changing the rules to reduce the chances of concussions.

actually, tens of thousands of young people have played football without suffering debilitating injuries...on the other hand, tens of thousands of young people have suffered terribly in car accidents...you gonna deny your family from driving, to be consistent...?

So, as I would like to do as a BI sufferer, kick med researchers in thesoft spot for doing NOTHING to heal us.
Suppose its learned that football concussions are not caused by contact, but steroids ?
I have no answers for those questions, unlike all these experts who clearly do have all the answers.
I can only speak from experience with about 25 college athletic programs...but it was pretty clear to me as a “civilian” that all of the teams had concussion protocols. I saw them enforced in football, soccer, baseball, softball, and basketball.
Concussions are an issue. In all sports.

I gave up the NFL right after Joe Montana retired, and like you, as a consequence, I have a much more enjoyable and productive life. And I watch my grown children with their children doing stuff together on weekends because they never got interested in “professional sports.”

I had 3 concussions just growing up in the late 60’s and early 70’s. ((bunch of brothers, major tom boy. Lived in (And falling out of) trees.) The last one projectile vomiting and lose on central vision for about an hour or so. (I got lucky, very)
40 years later, no problem. This is p.c. histrionics on steroids.

The last time I went to a Raider’s game they were so bad that I ended up watching the cheerleaders when they were on the field and that was in the 1970’s. Besides, Al Davis is a POS complete with gold chains who has screwed Alameda County so many times none of the members of the Board of Supes can’t walk. And FWIW there is nothing masculine about watching “pro” football, you’re just trying to live vicariously, sitting around blowing farts and drinking beer in front of the “big screen.” Oh, I almost forgot, and eating ball park franks! Get a life!
There sure seems to be some truth to it. Very strange if it weren’t true.
I’d like to be upset about this but the NFL has ruined the game and it is a bore.
Most of it consists of the excruciating disposition of various penalties and protests against said penalties.
Hard to imagine soccer will be a target. It’s a developing country’s wet dream and is pushed hard here by such countries and reps stateside and abroad.

just a wild guess on my part, but eloquence and intelligence haven’t been strong points in your life...
High school football is already effected I coach hs freshmen and participation has dropped almost 40 percent over the last 4 years.
