School meals will be free for every elementary school student in the Providence Public School District this year, according to a press release from PPSD.

“Providence Public Schools are committed to creating educational environments that support health and wellness,” said School Board member Robert Gondola, the chairman of the board’s Health and Wellness Committee. “The decision to make all elementary school meals free to students removes the financial stress some families may feel and ensures that students have both breakfast and lunch readily available to them.

The meals will be paid for by the federal government through the Community Eligibility Provision. Part of former President Barack Obama’s 2010 Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act.

At some point, the all free lunches are cheaper than having paid lunches. The infrastructure to collect the cash from the few paying students costs more than the income from those students. So make it all free, a handful that would have paid get a break, and so do the taxpayers under the current system.

Quickest numbers I could grab showed that 87% of the students in the district were getting free lunches in 2012, with several schools over 95% and one at 100%. (One elementary school was at 54%). I doubt things have improved there in the last 5 years. http://www.ride.ri.gov/Portals/0/Uploads/Documents/ERATE/Binder-2012-NSLP-EligibilityReportwithERATEDiscount.pdf

My husband and I have talked about retiring to a beach house in Rhode Island, but perhaps that was a mistake. There is much to recommend about the state, but politics isn’t among the list.

“The meals will be paid for by the federal government through the Community Eligibility Provision.”

Already there...

There is a growing chasm between the people paying the bills and those consuming the goods/services purchased. It is really pronounced here in the northeast, where an ageing, often childless white population is footing the bills for a younger, non-white, non-working population.

Not for free, nothing is free - someone else is lying for it.
