Australian Gun Culture Part 17: SSAA Shot Show in Brisbane, Queensland
Ammoland ^ | 30 August, 2017 | Dean Weingarten

The SSAA (Sporting Shooters Association of Australia) has a Shot Show in Brisbane, Queensland on 26-27 August, 2017. Australia is a day ahead of the United States, because of the international date line.

Media are required to wear the florescent vest pictured.  In the United States, Media are vetted before either the NSSF Shot Show or the NRA Annual Meeting. At the Australia Show, there is vetting, but the vest is also required.

The Australian Shot show differs in a number of ways from its American cousins. As you might expect, it is smaller.  Australia only has 7 percent of the number of people that America does, for a continent the same size as the lower 48 states.

In the United States, the Shot Show is for industry people, at least people that can show a relationship to the industry.

Before I started writing full time, I attended the show as a firearms trainer and Federal Firearms License holder.

The SSAA Shot Show is not small. The SSAA is similar to the American NRA, without the Second Amendment.  Last year, the SSAA Shot Show had over 12,000 attendees.

For comparison, the American Shot Show had about 65,000 attendees in Las Vegas, and the NRA Annual Meeting had a bit over 81,000 members show up in Atlanta in 2017.

The SSAA Shot Show is a bit closer in flavor to the American Shot Show. As a percentage of the population, the SSAA show has a higher percentage of attendees than either the American Shot Show or the NRA Annual Meeting.

At this years show in Brisbane there were over 130 exhibitors, many with multiple tables and displays, spread over two floors of the RNA Brisbane Showgrounds.

12,000 attendees is a large event for the Australian gun culture. Remember, Australia's population is only 1/14th that of the United States.

SHOT show is supposed to be only for people 'in the business.' It's not open to the public, so the attendance numbers between the US SHOT show and the SSAA SHOT show are not comparable.

Too bad there aren’t any guns there.

There's lots of guns there. In fact, there's more guns in Australia now than when the bans and compensated confiscation programs were implemented in 1996.

There are very few handguns, very few semi-automatic rifles or shotguns, and very few pump action shotguns (professional hunters can apply for licenses, which vary from state to state.)

But there are lots of bolt action, pump action, and lever action rifles, and double barrel shotguns.

How tacticool is that!

I was being semi sarcastic because of their shitty democrat-like gun laws. Certainly better than England.

Yes, I understand, and I was being semi-sarcastic with the tactical lever action.

Australia is slightly better than the U.K., but only because Australia is more rural than the U.K.

My favorite Aussie YouTube gun channel was Steve Lee, but he hasn't posted in about a year.

First saw him when he and his daughter were touring the U.S. and met up with Hickok45. If you've ever heard Hickok45's theme song "Life is good," That's Steve and his daughter singing.

Steve had a professional hunting license, so his channel was full of semi-auto rifles that other Aussies could no longer get, but his YouTube exposure cost him his license and his collection.

Crikey, no! I just follow Australia gun laws because the gun grabbers here use them as their shining beacon on the hill example.

You should visit France next. Despite the notion that there are no firearms rights in Europe outside of CH, I knew that France had more liberal ideas on gun ownership than many of their neighbors.

But nothing prepared me for seeing a pretty impressive gun store *inside* Paris itself not far from major tourist sites.

Cork Ireland was another stop where I found a gun store I didn’t expect along with items I was sure were prohibited to the citizens there.

So you were fully vetted then fully vested. Nice. Good to see you out and traveling. With all the writing and blogging you do I had imagined you always behind a keyboard or firing line.
Dean, thanks for what you do, helping keep the world informed.
