Thorium is more a long-term solution. I expect within 35 years power generation will be mostly natural gas, solar panels (in the parts of the world where solar power is actually financially viable like the southwestern quarter of the continental USA), and thorium-based molten salt reactor power plants. Sorry, nuclear fusion is still a long way away given current knowledge.

For the short term, super critical CO2 will be a good enhancement. 30% energy boost, (with comparable reduction in pollution), and can be dropped in to replace current coal plants and gas turbines.
For the real long term, nuclear plants powered by Uranium extracted from the ocean. 2 million year supply.

I’ve been following that technology and it seems as though (unless the Chinese are still pursuing it) nobody is developing this option.
