Berkeley police made ten arrests on Sunday, using tear gas to disperse black clad counter-protesters on several occasions, Newsweek reported from the protests Sunday.
Organizers had called off the “No Marxism in America” event earlier after strict police measures were introduced, but hundreds of counter-demonstrators and a small group of right-wing protesters gathered regardless. Mayor Arreguin said that new measures were required to tackle a violent fringe of left-wing demonstrators.
“I think we should classify them as a gang,” said Arreguin, as quoted by CBS. “They come dressed in uniforms. They have weapons, almost like a militia and I think we need to think about that in terms of our law enforcement approach.”
Arreguin said that although he does not support the far-right, tougher measures were required to counter left-wing violence, and called for non-violent protesters to take a stand.
In the wake of Charlottesville and Sunday’s unrest, Arreguin called for UC Berkeley to cancel a follow-up appearance by Yiannopoulos scheduled for September, during an event titled Free Speech Week.
“I believe that is the right thing to do,” said Arreguin. “And if they don’t do that, then they need to work with the city and potentially assist the city through resources to be able to adequately police what we know is going to be a large protest that will spill out onto the city streets.”

He’s posted a lot about Antifa in the last several days.
His assessment (and he always posts photos and links etc to support his positions) is that the DoJ is heavy into investigating Antifa and its ilk, and there were feds at the last Berkeley think (photos of them) and one got beaten. 13 arrests at the event.
So IMHO the Mayor (gag puke) realizes the gig is up and he doesn’t want to get caught in the dragnet.
Loosely organized is probably accurate. These groups are generally small cells acting independently but in concert with each other, not a top down classic organazation. Not to say the larger left isn’t well organized and funded. I think you’re being too picky, the writer didn’t say they were unorganized or loners.

I think that the left might be waking up to the fact that they cant control this group and all it will do is get more violent.

word has gone out this week on the leftist tom-tom network to condemn these thugs, and more importantly, to signal their financial backers to back off. there’s been a series of articles from major leftist “news” sources in the last week with headlines like “Antifa Anarachist Attack Peaceful Right-Wing Demonstrators”.

You are right. I follow Wictor on Twitter as well.
The photos from the event clearly show federal agents of some sort there in the crowd. If the one guy that was beat down is indeed a fed with what appeared to be audio recording equipment on his belt, this case is not too far from going to the next level.
What’s interesting is that they likely did the same thing in VA and you can bet there were feds there too.
Trump said something interesting during a press conference not too long after VA. He told a member of the media that they didn’t have the whole story, that there are more facts they don’t know about yet.
