If this theater company thought their patrons wouldn't give a damn, they were wrong.
A historic Memphis, Tennessee, theater, which has shown "Gone With the Wind" screenings for 34 years, has decided to remove the classic film from its schedule due to its racially "insensitive" content.
The move comes after violence erupted at a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, earlier this month. The president of the Orpheum Theatre said the decision to remove the 1939 film was not directly related to the recent

Darn it, alright, I’m reposting what I just wrote on a Rush thread about the same thing, partly.
GWTW is a truly great movie, and it is NOT about slavery.
In fact, while it may be argued that 2/3 of the prime black characters are quite caricaturish and demeaning, Mammy is unquestionably not stupid and definitely throws her weight around. They are all loveable to at least some extent. Including the more minor slaves such as Big Sam who saves Scarlett (and is greeted by her during the siege and told to come to her if anything bad happens to him and his friends).
Of course, they probably dont like that Ashley declares we didnt treat them (slaves) that way when discussing using criminal chain gangs for labor.

And Blazing Saddles will probably be put out to pasture along side Song of the South, not to be a found again on US home video or cable or theatrical screenings.

Then comes “The Godfather”. After all, a few Italians back in the day thought it unfairly portrayed them, so it would not surprise me to see the same sort of controversy nowadays.

A privately owned movie theater made decisions about which movies to show? This is controversial because, why, exactly?

When was the last time anyone saw Song of the South? Poor bootleg versions exist, but I haven't seen it in a theater for over 60 years.

How about “Slapshot”. After all, that showed fighting in hockey and all sorts of other things the little twits who write the sports pages these days do not like about the vintage game.

I don't think Mammy would take a lot of crap from anyone.
To: itsahoot
So, you believe that you have the right to dictate what movies a privately owned theater shows?
