The story I just heard on the news was this guy recently got out of the Navy, and he was worried that the VA wouldn't cover this accidentally self-inflicted wound. So he made up this elaborate story.
So now he's going to be nationally shamed, when he could have just gone to the ER and said 'I accidentally cut myself'.
