German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she regrets nothing about her response to the migrant crisis of 2015.
More than a million people from across Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East entered Germany two years ago after Mrs Merkel opened her country's doors to Syrian refugees.
Her party's support dropped as a consequence and led to a surge in support for the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which pollsters say could win up to 10 percent in the September election. But in an interview with the Welt am Sonntag newspaper, the chancellor said she would do everything 'the same way again' if she had the opportunity.
'I'd make all the important decisions of 2015 the same way again,' Merkel said.
'It was an extraordinary situation and I made my decision based on what I thought was right from a political and humanitarian standpoint. 'Those kinds of extraordinary situations happen every once in a while in a country's history,' she added. 'The head of government has to act and I did.'
She also attacked EU countries that refused to accept migrants as part of a redistribution plan, explaining that such behaviour is 'not on'.
'That contradicts the spirit of Europe,' she said. 'We'll overcome that. 'It will take time and patience but we will succeed.'

Germany decides to apologize for Hitler once and for all by committing suicide.
She’s a leftie. Consequences be dammed.
Merkel is succeeding where Hitler failed - the destruction of Germany.
At this stage, Merkel with the CDU-CSU Party situation....will take 38-percent of the vote. The anticipated challenger (SPD) have fallen since January from around 32-percent to 22-percent. It’s just not any real challenge for Merkel.
She will have to form a coalition situation with a junior party, and that’s the only real issue left as you wait for the election to occur in three weeks.
Are German elections rigged or is the electorate addicted to govt subsidies and taxes? Why is Merkel still in office? Why are the Europeans so dense and too proud to admit their strategy to import slave labor is the end of historical Europe for Europeans?
You may not but I bet many of your countrymen do.
Germans have their very own "hillary'.
Any replacement to Merkel will be even worse.
She cannot accept the fact that she is wrong.
This is brought up almost nightly.
Germans laugh over the idea of SPD’s Schulz getting the votes. Roughly half of the SPD voters don’t want a win, which would lead to a Green Party-Linke Party partnership.
Most people see Schulz as some bureaucrat out of Brussels.
The rest of the parties have marginal candidates so 2017 is really a waste. Merkel retires (for sure) after this four-year term, and there’s three or four individuals discussed in CDU circles to replace her. All represent a different future for Germany...with changes over immigration.
One million barbarians.
The German people should have Mussolini’d her by now.
Wake up Europe! You’re done otherwise.
Yes, she did. And so did the heads of government in Hungary and Poland.
But they opted to protect their culture and people from Islamic invasion, while Merkel warmly ushered in the destruction and eventual death of her own people.
There's a lesson here somewhere...
She has to know that she is dooming european germany to suicide by demographics.
However, if she admits she is wrong she becomes liable and looses her political power. That is what is at stake. That is what she cares about most.
Godlessness leads to irrationality and cultural suicide-by-barbarian. We are being teed up for the same. God is no respecter of persons/nations.
22Mark this, then, you who forget God,
lest I tear you apart, and there be none to deliver!
23The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me;
to one who orders his way rightly
I will show the salvation of God!
Psalm 50
Merkel has no children and no investment in the future.
Her leadership lacks depth perception because she can’t envision 20 years from now in Germany, and she will likely be dead.
She doesn’t care. Why are Germans so unmindful?
nazis and islamists have long shared communities of mutual interest.
The only thing crazier than Merkel making this statement is knowing she stands a good chance to be reelected next month.
I don’t get it, unless the majority of voters are fatalists.
