Trump's pardon of ex-Sheriff Joe Arpaio was the right (and courageous) thing to do
Fox News Opinion ^ | August 26,2017 | James J. Fotis

President Trump stood up for justice and for enforcement of our immigration laws when he courageously granted a pardon Friday to Joe Arpaio, the former sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona. Despite knowing he would face criticism, the president did what was right.

Arpaio was convicted by a federal judge in July of criminal contempt after being charged with violating a court order that attempted to prevent suspected illegal immigrants from being targeted by the sheriff’s traffic patrols. The sheriff acknowledged continuing the patrols, but said that targeting was not the focus.

Arpaio’s conviction arose out of a lawsuit wrongfully accusing the sheriff’s office of violating the rights of Hispanics, allegedly using racial profiling tactics to identify people for traffic stops, and detaining convicts based only on the suspicion that they were illegal immigrants. Arpaio denied all wrongdoing.

I sat in the courtroom through Arpaio’s trial and concluded that he was wrongfully convicted. As a former law enforcement officer myself and former executive director of the Law Enforcement Alliance of America, I know that Arpaio was dedicated to protecting the public he served and that his highest priority was keeping his community safe.

Hearing testimony during Arpaio’s trial, I realized that any reasonable person who was there to pass judgment on this honest law-abiding man – who gave his life to the rule of law – could never have found him guilty on the evidence presented.

However, the only one who could pass judgment on the former sheriff was U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton, because Arpaio was denied his right to a jury trial under the Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The judge’s verdict convicting Arpaio was a travesty of justice.

Why didn’t Sessions drop the legal action against Arpaio?

I am of two minds on the pardon. On the one hand it’s good to see it put to bed.

On the other hand, I would have liked to see the case go through the appeals process. There is no doubt Arpaio would have prevailed. Then the judge could have faced sanctions. Hopefully up to and including disbarment.

At least it’s over and lefty minds are exploding.

Yes.

It’s great to have Trump as our president.

It’s good that FoxNews published this editorial.

Appeals are expensive. Arpaio is caring for a cancer-stricken wfie. They were trying to bankrupt him.

Now Clinton's pardon of Marc Rich was not courageous but monetary. even back then the Clintons knew how to turn a dollar at the government's expense.

Why didn’t Sessions drop the legal action against Arpaio?

I know it is popular to blame Sessions for everything but I am not sure he had anything to do with this case. Arpaio was tried for contempt of court by the judge whose order he was charged with violating. (I disagree with the judge not allowing a jury trial.)

How many beautiful blonde Swedish/German/Norwegian women do you see crossing the Border?

How many Chinese/Japanese/Thai people do you see crossing the border?

Few or none!

So of course Arpaio sought out Hispanic-looking people.

Is it racial profiling or is it the OBJECTIVE USE OF STATISTICS???

Likewise how many non-Muslims do suicide bombings? Would it be racial profiling to search for Muslims if there are rumors of a suicide bombing or would it simply be the objective use of STATISTICS??

People are so dumb to label it “racial profiling.”

I always have problems with presidential pardons when I hear about them because almost always it is done as the president is leaving office when the president does not have to worry about the political ramifications of what he did. President Trump is awesome because this is not a midnight last day in office pardon but one that was done not as a political favor but was done because the legal system had been abused by the Democratic party as a weapon to go after a law and order sheriff who was only doing what was necessary and legal to protect his constincesy . ex sheriff Arapaho is 85 years old and this would of been tied up in the courts the next 5 years as it was argued out till it reached the Supreme court with a good chance that during this time he would of died of old age.;...the man deserves are thanks for his service and a few quiet years .

Hears to hoping that Trump is able to leave office someday being the only president not to give out Lame duck pardons as pay off to the politically connected

It is amazing that people don’t really understand how costly this kind of stuff is and that is exactly why these petty bureaucrats need to be held accountable. While not so clear when a Judge does it and what the remedy would be. Judges and Bureaucrats need to be held personally accountable for governmental overreach.

All the Sheriff did was enforce the Law of the Land. Never understood what the problem was.
