WMAL PING LIST!
Oops - Alexandria, VA not Arlington, VA.... same thing, basically. Only a few miles apart.
Oh my! Thank you for posting now to convince my wife of the need to go to this hehe
I attended the one at the McLean Hilton. Lots of fun and nice to sit at a table with like-minded people. WMAL is on a roll with their on-air talent though I do miss Brian Wilson. I follow him on twitter and he says ‘something’s in the works’. Hope that works out for him soon. I’m glad they got rid of ABC News yet their news desk is definitely like CNN. I turn it off.
Original Birchmere (this area) was in Arlington.
Talk about holding onto a dream and seeing it through.
Birchmere was a hole in the wall beer joint in South Arlington in the 70s or so and Gary Oelze stuck it through, moved it to Alexandria and ‘took off’.
I remember us bar denizens telling him it would never work.
See, don’t always follow the advice of your so called ‘friends’ even though they kept your business open..(at least in our minds)...<: <: <:
Glad to see him ‘make it’.
Chris Plante is the very best talk show host IMHO. He is knowledgeable, witty, super smart and does not hold back on calling out leftists for their lies.
Yes, I miss Brian as well and I miss Larry in the mornings, although I’m happy that he got his own show in the afternoon.
And, of course, The Planteman is now national and “on a roll”. The last time I saw him (about 8 months ago), he came up to me and gave my son and I long hugs. We had like 20 photos taken with him and I even FaceTimed my brother in Boston so that he could see Plante in “real time”. I was taken aback by all the time he gave us because this is “THE” Chris Plante, but he says that he always appreciates me being a fan from the very start of his radio career (remember his evening show back in 2006?), and he’s known my son Jay since age 6 (he’s now almost 17)... he remembered my weekly Free Republic “Chris Plante Show” threads, and had a photographic memory about the FR fans and the like.
I’ll probably go to this event on Oct. 15th and I hope to see you there if you attend!
Great to “see” and chat with you again!
Please add me to your WMAL ping list.
I’ve been listening to WMAL since the mid 1980’s.
Do you remember “Whitey’s”?
Best dive bar in Northern Virginia.
Was sad to see it close.
Done! Welcome! :-)
Oh yes...
Also the ‘dump’ in Clarendon near Red Top Cab.
I guess I could say that I was ‘proud’ to know the owners of most of the dump establishments of the mid 60s & 70s.
Sure beats the hell out of the ‘fern bars’ that replaced them.
EVERY dump in every city is exactly the same.
I used to sit around a ‘new establishment’ and name all the characters that were in other establishments I used to plop my elbow down in.
And for Arlington, don’t forget NORTON’s, withing easy walking distance of the Pentagon/Ft Myer and Quarters K.
At that time (early to mid 60s) Cocos was an upscale restaurant..ha ha
Well, at least we can count on the Crystal City Restaurant.
T*T’s and Steak.
Used to have ‘tryouts’ at BP Restaurant across the street.
Owned by a former ‘barber’ to the Presidents?? or so he claimed.
He cut my hair a few times (rarely charged?? made up for it in his bar I guess)
I am a great believer in the
ONLY difference between a CHEAP and 200 dollar haircut is a couple of weeks...
I remember a watering hole on Wlson Blvd before Clarendon..think it was called the Wilson Inn or something supposedly carried back to ‘Colonial Times’.
It was down near Marios & Highlander Motel??
Interior looked like it was from that era....
WOW, Back in the Day Time!
Remember Columbia Pile from a soul food joint near the Hall down to the Broiler at Glebe & the Pike. My first Philly style steak&cheese and Hoagie. Somewhere in between was a old school Italian place and nearby a pizza carryout. Carryout prepared a great “Poasted Tolish” Ham sandwich. Broiler owner Irv & his cousin(?)Tommy were decent guys. Knew one of the Coco boys - sometimes a “clique” pain in the tuchus. Also went to school with Irv’s girlfriend.
Birchmere in Shirlington was a great place. Enjoyed the Seldom Scene more than a few times. Equal number of long & beery drives home. After the loss of John Duffy and move to Arlandria it was never the same.
I also was on the Henrico. We caught a ride on her from Danang to Oki for re-fitting and replacements. Three-four days of standing in-line for chow. Return trip was Henrico to Subic. After about 7-10 days in Subic we returned Down South on the Iwo.
Sorry if I wore out any welcome but it’s been years since hearing about Arlington.

Interesting story - thanks for sharing!
