White House Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert said Friday that with Hurricane Harvey - predicted to be the most powerful storm to hit the U.S. in more than a decade - set to hit Texas and possibly Louisiana, residents should not lose faith in government.
Bossert cautioned, however, not to plan for the federal government to swoop in and provide everything that residents need when they need it. He said while the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA are responsible for bringing together the firepower of the federal government to assist the state and local governments, state and local governments are in the lead here, and weve got a lot of respect for and a lot of faith in the governors of those respective states, as well, directly in the path. When asked to explain further his remarks on not losing faith in government institutions, Bossert said, Im telling you from my own personal experience that its important in every emergency, and Ive been through a lot of them, to remind people to listen to their state and local officials, because, inevitably, people dont, and then they end up thinking they wish they had. Right? So you have nothing to lose but your life, and I want you to take it seriously, and I want you to listen to those state and local officials, he said.
In fact, Im not worried about you losing faith in the federal government. Im worried about you losing faith in the state and local government that provides you the best information that they have, and so dont worry about parsing whether theyre right or wrong. If theyre asking you to evacuate and telling you to do it now, listen to their advice, Bossert said.

Way too late.
Nearly 30 years too late.
You are correct Tom. It is way past time. I lost all faith in .gov 15 years ago. Events since then have only proven me right.
The only people that have faith in government are those for whom government is their god.
Well said.
I have complete faith in my government.
I absolutely believe that it will almost always make things worse, that it will be co-opted by the very powers it is supposed to oversee, that it will be generally populated by individuals who are more concerned with keeping their job than doing anything to actually help me and that if it happens to do something right, such will be at a cost orders of magnitude higher than it should be. I’ve got faith that would make Peter jealous and Mo-Ham-Ad (piss be upon him) gasp as the mountains moved.
At least 30, maybe more.
Midnight cash pallets
Lear-jet meetings
WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE, EH...???
RIDICULOUS..!
I was going to say.
I have never had “faith” in government. My faith is in God, not in men nor their works.
I have zero faith in any government institution and voted for Trump hoping he would burn the whole damn thing down.
The time to start was when FDR succeeded in kicking the Constitution to the curb and No-Repeal Eisenhower faithlessly rubber stamped his lawlessness.
Can’t “lose” what we lost long ago....
Yeh right. If you don’t have your own survival stuff you are screwed.
Yeah, but I had a slight bit of hope during the Reagan years.
And Trump is doing a bang up job rejecting bits of the regulatory state.
Tommy give up the fight. You’ve lost the right.
Very well said. The only people who put faith in government are fools. I recommend the Southpark episode “Let go and Let Gov” for a great laugh.
I never read of one Founder who had faith in government but ALWAYS the faith in God. The Constitution was not written for what we see today named after one of the greatest Americans:Washington. The Constitution was the blueprint for individual liberty and prosperity with the framework for a limited government by Americans. Those who see government as a mother or father let alone their God will have very little use for the Constitution and the America as founded.
