I always thought that was the case. They were on a suicide mission.....................
It was barely water tight as seen by how it had already killed previous crew members. So it didn’t take much.

So it is no longer the CSS Hunley.
I was always impressed by the courage of the men who sailed her. I did a lot of crazy stuff in my youth but I would never have gotten into such an obvious deathtrap.
There was a well-done TV movie about the Hunley.
CSS Hunley ...
BLM Does not care, it killed some Confederates!
Back when the Navy had tactical nuclear weapons, there was a doctrine for shooting a target in an acoustic convergence zone. Not a great idea because the same conditions that allowed one to hear the target would focus the blast wave back to your ship.
Sort of like shaken baby syndrome taken to the tenth power and delivered in one second or less. That’s a risk nobody would have known about then, especially how non-compressible water transmits shocks bar better than compressible air.
First time I’ve heard of that. I was thinking of all the depth charges our subs took in WW II.
If the charge got too close it broke the hull. Never heard of any sailors dying from blast.
..... the crew died instantly from the force of the explosion travelling through the soft tissues of their bodies, especially their lungs and brains.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“Instant” - better than suffocation & drowning.
At least it was quick
There is an incredible ongoing reclamation project underway on the Hunley in Charleston.
Ii is well worth everyones time to visit while in the great city
The Hunley was a CONFEDERATE sub! Confederate=BAD!
Destroy! destroy! Kill it! Kill it!
Meanwhile, statues to the racist Sherman still stand proud.

I recently saw a life size replica of the Hunley. I imagined getting in that thing, going under water and hunting for ships.
I shuddered. I lack that kind of courage. It’s amazing anyone is that brave.
