hen Richard Saukko galloped his chalk-white Arabian horse named Traveler around the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum almost 56 years ago, it was supposed to be a one-time stunt.
Instead, the brief performance before USC kicked off its season against Georgia Tech turned into one of college footballs iconic traditions. A succession of white horses named Traveler have followed Traveler IX debuts this fall trotting out of the tunnel as Conquest plays and the costumed Trojan warrior atop the horse waves a sword. But during a rally earlier this week to show solidarity in the aftermath of the violence in Charlottesville, Va., a USC campus group linked the name to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, whose favorite horse was Traveller.
At the rally, according to the student newspaper the Daily Trojan, Saphia Jackson, co-director of the USC Black Student Assembly, asked students not to be quiet, and reminded that white supremacy hits close to home and referenced the name of the Trojans mascot.
The Black Student Assembly did not respond to requests for comment, but questions about the names provenance have increased on social media in the midst of the national discussion on race.

Beautiful car. Very nice lines and I love the rumble seat.
Got it.
Got it.
You forgot VMI and Washington & Lee in Virginia.
Oh because only 2 horses in history have had the name Traveler or Traveller. Wait...
Mind you those links are to horses registered with that name with various registries, that only allow one living horse to have the name registered at a time.
Naming a horse Traveler is like naming a dog Duke. Ignorance abounds.
This is crazy!!!
I love that horse!! Fight On!!
Links I gave above were supposed to go to lists of horses registered with those names. It didn’t work that way but you can go search the name spelled both ways to see what I mean. A list of many horses throughout the years with those names will come up under the search for each spelling. I look up horses all the time and have never had another name with so many possibles come up. Remember this does not include all the people that name unregistered horses that name or people that use that for a nickname or “barn” name.

Of course Traveller IX is named after Lee’s horse. Traveler is the most famous non race horse in US history.
It’s a horse. I don’t think either Traveler has an opinion on white supremacy.
I know that is the end result, but the leftists are too stupid and ignorant to see it.
Think of all the people named Lee, Jackson, Jefferson, etc... Hmm...what to do, what to do...
Robert E Lee was an honorable man. There is no reason to destroy his history. This is STUPID.
>> A good portion of our country has gone bonkers
Well, I think it’s mostly activist media and the activist corporations driving the chaos. For this reason, the parent companies largely driving the MSM narrative should not be supported: Disney, Comcast, Viacom, and now AT&T.

A lot of mythology surrounds the man, too. Certainly read/heard differently about his attitude toward slavery. Thanks.
I consider it ‘interesting’ that the leftist Atlantic ran this piece in June 2017... Like, what did they know and when did they know it on the protest front?
...and is it all factual? They do not have the history of the KKK right, just looked it up.
The country is rapidly approaching “peak offense” to everything. Typically when a peak occurs , there is a massive reversal. It’s time, long overdue in fact, for the grevience culture to collapse.
So let me get this straight, Democrats are upset about memorials erected by Democrats honoring other Democrats from a war started by Democrats.
... and the horse he rode in on.
Initially I thought this was a satire.
Since it is not, it only shows that the left and their colored supporters have totally lost their minds, whatever little they may have had initially.
