[Oregon / Eclipse] Fire sparked by lightning near Sisters still 0% contained, evac order issued

Incident commanders say the Milli Fire, which is located about 9 miles west of Sisters, remains 0 percent contained.

It started about a week ago and has spread to more than 4,600 acres. 250 personnel are fighting it, and a red flag warning has been issued for Friday. Crews expect it to spread with the help of 20 to 25 mph winds, along with warm and dry weather.

A Level 3 evacuation (which means residents need to leave immediately) has been issued for the Crossroads subdivision, Remuda Road, Wildwing Road and Peterson Burn Road.

Central Oregon FReepers...what's the prognosis for air quality for the Redmond, Madras, Prineville, Mitchell areas? It was looking real good up until today, but the rapid growth of the Milli fire and its zero containment doesn't sound good for the Monday eclipse. Is the smoke going south or spreading east? I'm driving up tomorrow from the SF Bay Area and wondering if I should go further east (originally planning to go to Redmond / Madras). What say you?

Go wherever there will be the least vehicle traffic.

It’s getting crowded in Albany/Corvallis and there is haze from the fires but visibility of the eclipse should be fair. Some stations have run out of gas.

Peterson Burn Road was apparently aptly named.

Thanks. I've seen that tool. I've been following the Forest Service tool Monitoring v3.2 very closely. If you click on the link, you will see the stations I'm following.

It isn't easy to correlate the PM2.5 particulate data to actual visibility conditions, though. Local reports on the ground would be most helpful.

Hi. I live in the foothills of Mt. Hood SE of Portland. I watch the smoke pattern on visible satellite pix of the PNW. This morning the smoke seems to be drifting south. You can also look at traffic cams from ODOT that are east of the Cascades. Weather people up here are saying skies should be clear east of the mountains (as well as the Willamette Valley.) FYI the totality shadow is 60-70mi wide. A million people are expected to come to Oregon to watch! About 1/4M east of the Cascades. Thing is, not many roads over there, US26 & 97 are the main ones leading to the totality path. Report last night on KATU said there was a 15mi backup on the road to Prineville. My nephew works at a station up in Sandy on US26 going to Mt. Hood and they are pumping like crazy and having trouble getting gas loads in now. Might be wise to not be on “fumes” when you get up here. Also you may want to stick around an extra day til traffic thins out a bit. I saw the eclipse in February ‘79 up in Goldendale, WA. Something to experience for yourself. Hope you can come for this event. Best wishes.

Good luck. I originally wanted to go see it in Mitchell, but opted for a less crowded area (Riverton, WY).

Thanks, Blue. Definitely driving up tomorrow. Have a room in Redmond for Sat and Sun nights, but plan to assess Sunday morning and head east I’d the air is poor. That means losing out on a night at the Super 8 and sleeping in the car, but what the heck.

The traffic cams today showed light traffic in 97 and 26. I heard the jam yesterday was 30 miles long.

I’m planning to gas up before I leave Calif. I’ve got a good range in my Expedition, so should be ok. Thanks for the advice.

If need be, I’ll drive into Idaho. The Idaho Falls / Rexburg area has low cloud probabilities, but not quite as good as the high plateau in Central OR. Air is pretty clear in ID right now.

“Only “ a few thousands acres so far. Will almost certainly expand Sat-Sun-Monday, but unless it crosses the roads blocking access away from the smoke, it should not be too bad. Regardless of clouds (or smoke) the total eclipse will still be impressive, just not as clear-cut an image as under the perfectly clear skies.

Madras will probably be fine. I am in Bend and the air is terrible. The wind is blowing south so Madras should be OK. Redmond probably will also be OK. The McKensie pass will probably be closed.

Mitchell has the lowest August cloud probability of any spot in the US along the totality path. I'm sure you knew that. I may drive to eastern ID on Sunday if Central OR is bad.
