Confederate Soldiers are American Veterans by Act of Congress
Veterans Today ^ | April 14, 2011 | By Jim W. Dean, Managing Editor

....

Congressional Appropriations Act, FY 1901, signed 6 June 1900

Congress passed an act of appropriations for $2,500 that enabled the “Secretary of War to have reburied in some suitable spot in the national cemetery at Arlington, Virginia, and to place proper headstones at their graves, the bodies of about 128 Confederate soldiers now buried in the National Soldiers Home near Washington, D.C., and the bodies of about 136 Confederate soldiers now buried in the national cemetery at Arlington, Virginia.”

Remarks: More important than the amount (worth substantially more in 1900 than in 2000) is the move to support reconciliation by Congressional act. In 1906, Confederate Battle flags were ordered to be returned to the states from whence they originated. Some states refused to return the flags. Wisconsin still has at least one flag it refuses to return.

Congressional Act of 9 March 1906

We Honor Our Fallen Ancestors

(P.L. 38, 59th Congress, Chap. 631-34 Stat. 56)

Authorized the furnishing of headstones for the graves of Confederates who died, primarily in Union prison camps and were buried in Federal cemeteries.

Remarks: This act formally reaffirmed Confederate soldiers as military combatants with legal standing. It granted recognition to deceased Confederate soldiers commensurate with the status of deceased Union soldiers.

U.S. Public Law 810, Approved by 17th Congress 26 February 1929

(45 Stat 1307 – Currently on the books as 38 U.S. Code, Sec. 2306)

This law, passed by the U.S. Congress, authorized the “Secretary of War to erect headstones over the graves of soldiers who served in the Confederate Army and to direct him to...

Please edify yourself then share far and wide. Especially at your VFW or American Legion Post.

Essentially all of these Civil War memorials are to American Veterans and are therefore US Veterans Memorials.

The VA, VFW and American Legion need to get busy here.

And all Americans need to protect these memorials just like they would the Viet Nam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC.

They are the same, by law and by military convention and honor.

I’m kinda confused. The only way they could be considered “NOT” American veterans would be if they won the war and successfully became another country. But they lost, so they were always a part of the US.

With this maybe some U.S. folks will have greater understanding of Japanese respect for their war dead.

Men fight for “their country” and rarely for or against the “noble ideals” of the political class.

They fought against the U.S. and not for it. They were not granted U.S. veteran status until the mid-1950s.

With all these communists running wild today, I can only think this:

“Union” Federals - in the heat of battle! - had less animus to the Confederate rebels than these pathetic commie loser bastards so safely removed from their grasp!

As of the date of the article, the VA was still paying two surviving children survivor benefits...from Confederate Veterans.

Amazing.

Yeah, and if it was up to you, they’d still be denied citizenship status.

Still remember Liz Holtzman (who you remind me of) refusing to vote for Marsh Robert to be given his citizenship back.

Yes, but fighting against a country does not take away your citizenship. It may take away your life, of course. :)

And when did I ever say that?

Still remember Liz Holtzman (who you remind me of) refusing to vote for Marsh Robert to be given his citizenship back.

You don't find restoring someone's citizenship 105 years after he died to be a little ridiculous? Kind of like the Mormon's baptizing someone who's been dead for centuries.

It doesn’t matter they were granted it. And Veteran groups are not happy about this Monument removal and statue removal. And this is why the Dems lose they go too far because they’re going to stand up and fight veterans now? I said this before and another thread and excuse me if it’s offensive, but it has to be said the Democratic party is a big shit show and they’re too stupid to realize how bad and low they are. They’ve lost so many seats in the last few years all across the board and they just keep beating the same old racism horse.

They're just pandering to a particular part of their base. Both sides do it.

They were not granted U.S. veteran status until the mid-1950s.

My great-great grandfather was provided a veteran's headstone by the US government after his son applied for it when his father died, because of his confederate veteran status.

Way before the 1950's.

They were not granted U.S. veteran status until the mid-1950s.

And furthermore, it was common for survivors of confederate veterans to receive benefits from the US government after the war.
