Philanthropist James Phelan had a deep streak of racism

The urge to engage in retroactive political correctness is creating a dangerously slippery slope. Just how far should it go? Take, for example, the story of James Duval Phelan (1861-1930).

A multimillionaire of inherited wealth with an uncanny business acumen of his own, Phelan was always acclaimed as a “man of enlightenment” and a patron of the arts and music. Few others were as revered in San Francisco or regarded as a greater friend.

There were no secrets about Phelan’s unique political ideas that became frequent themes in campaign oratory. As a senator, he vociferously called for an “all white California,” demanding exclusion of all Chinese and the establishment of laws forbidding marriage between Asians and Caucasians. Repeatedly, he claimed that the issue of such inter-racial unions would be “degenerates.” After the destruction of Chinatown in the earthquake and fire of 1906, Phelan campaigned for the relocations of all “Mongolians,” already here, to Hunters Point. Moreover, he asserted that Japanese bred “like vermin” and were totally incapable of assimilation.”,

the only serious racism in USA today, except for the backlash to same, is the institutionalized racism in employment and academia......this is seriously hurting, weakening America as well as, obviously, destroying our morals

oh yeah, as long as San Fransicko wants to rehash its racist history, let’s not overlook Dennis Kearney...founder of the Workingman’s Party of California...who successfully ran on a racist platform...and whose movement succeeded in adopting a new CA Constitution in 1979 to replace the original 1849 one. The new 1879 constitution empowered cities to set up designated racial areas of settlement. It could be that San Fransicko was the very first city in America to officially establish a racial ghetto..........for the Chinese....and I knew an elderly man who grew up while the police were still enforcing it....so any Chinese who ventured out of the designated few square blocks (now the tourist trap of Chinatown) was promptly beat up by the ‘white men’ of the city....while the police stood by...before the cops then arrested and hauled the bleeding Chinese into jail.
Does anyone know a USA city which established racist limitations of settlement before Nancy Pelosi’s sick City?
