Canada Wants to Make Nafta More 'Progressive'
Fox Business/Dow Jones ^ | 8/14/2017 | Paul Vieira

Posted on 08/14/2017 2:29:05 PM PDT by RightGeek

Canada will enter talks to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement with a goal to seek exemptions from Washington's Buy America directives, and push for stronger labor and environmental standards in the pact.

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland on Monday provided broad outlines on what Canada's bottom line on Nafta renegotiations, which begin in earnest on Wednesday in Washington.

...

She said local-content provisions, such as Buy America, "are political junk-food -- superficially appetizing, but unhealthy in the long run."

Ms. Freeland said Canada also wants to make Nafta more "progressive," through tougher labor and environmental standards. On the environment, she said Canada wants the countries to support efforts to combat climate change, and cast a skeptical eye toward countries that "[weaken] environmental protection to attract investment."

She added Canada would continue to defend the need for an independent dispute-resolution system, which currently allows companies to contest trade sanctions before independent panels instead of through national courts. The Trump administration wants the system scrapped.

Canada also plans to defend its agricultural policies, in which production and prices in dairy and poultry, for instance, are controlled through a quota system, and foreign competition is thwarted through high tariffs.

Buy American is "political junk-food", but Buy Canadian isn't according to the twit. Guess she isn't worried about Canadian cow flatulence either.

I can just imagine the kind of labor and environmental trash those leftists want. We would be ahead to just rip it up and tell them to pound sand.

They want to use NAFTA as a socialist tool for income redistribution and spreading global warming junk science. Great way to kill our economy and make everyone equally poor.

Every manufacturing dollar attracted here from other countries DECREASES the irrelevant amount of anthropogenic CO2 emitted. US factories make more goods per ton of CO2, so if CO2 were harming the environment, then moving any (or ALL) manufacturing here would be a benefit.

Unless you don't really believe CO2 causes global warming, or unless you have another agenda you can't talk about.

“through tougher labor and environmental standards”, she lies! labor is their cash cow, how does she propose to get tough on labor? and we all know where tougher environmental standards will get them. They are all drinking from the same cesspool as our very own progressive idiots

I think that's it's very worthwhile to have a good, vibrant trade agreement with Canada. An agreement that takes into consideration the legitimate aspirations of both countries would be outstanding.I know that the Big Three have factories in Canada that build cars destined for the US.One would assume that cars built here are sold in Canada as well.Just as an aside...the breakfast cereal I've eaten (and loved) since I was a kid is "Life" cereal ("Mikey likes it" for those old enough to remember the ads from the 60's/70's).

On the boxes, printed in bold letters,it says "Made In Canada"...despite the fact that the US is known to grow oats as well.

Just sayin'...

As for trade with Mexico...Canada is surely free to sign any treaty they want with Mexico but *we* should consider Mexico an economic enemy just as harmful to us as is China.I say bleep them,trade-wise.I'll pay more for my avacados and I have absolutely *no* desire to vacation there...or go there for any other reason.

Does Canada know that Donald Trump, not Hillary Clinton, won the election?

It could be they're still in shock up there.

But everybody wants to be a dealmaker nowadays, and with everybody cutting deals all over the place, who knows what the final result will be?

EXACTLY!!!

Canada prohibits American television channels from airing in Canada because they lack ‘Canadian content’.

This despite the fact that the programming they prohibit is all too often produced in Canada, stars Canadians, and is filmed in Canada.

Screw them!

Come on, I have this warehouse full of damned unicorns that only run on solar batteries.

WHERE THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO SELL THESE ???

Support progressive Nafta. Or I’m stuck with these unicorns for, like, forever.

My sentiments exactly. What is popular up here in the Great White North are “grey” market satellite dishes that you can get billed from an American address, but you can get Direct TV or any other U.S. based satellite service and avoid the dumb, pretentious Canadian content regulations.

Oh, they're quite aware of it, as are the liberals and socialists in this country and elsewhere. The plan is to constantly bombard Trump with this nonsense until either:

(a) Trump walks away from it,
(b) coerce Trump into some offense that the squishy GOPe would being about impeachment proceedings, or
(c) generate a massive amount of political fatigue where most in the middle of the country give up fighting.

Given what I've observed for the past several decades, I'm guessing (c) will have some measure of success.
