>>>At some point dont the internet backbone companies become similar to utilities?
The FCC just voted in May to stop regulating the internet as a utility. Now dolks seem to be in favor of Net Neutrality.

Scroogled (by Cory Doctorow)
Greg landed at San Francisco International Airport ... but by the time hed made it to .. the customs line, it was after midnight. ... after a month on the beach in Cabo.
Tell me about your hobbies. Are you into model rocketry?
What?....
You see, I ask because I see a heavy spike in ads for rocketry supplies showing up alongside your search results and Google mail.
I despise google and refuse to use it. I use DuckDuckGo instead.
If it isn’t, it should be.
He’s absolutely correct. If the gov doesn’t bring anti-trust charges against Google, Twitter and Facebook soon-conservative voices will be wiped from the web.
Gotta have an actual preponderance of conservatives in the Congress for something like that to happen. Presently, we have way too many Neville Chamberlain style appeasers masquerading as representatives to conservatives.
As much as I loathe regulation of private industry, this conclusion is inescapable.
As a practical matter free speech in the 21st. Century takes place on the internet. We can’t allow a handful of tech companies to pick and choose what gets through, or else free speech is dead.
Buy off? They were bought off long ago .....
This is one of the best ideas I’ve read in a long time.
One key piece is missing. Since Congress is against the people but fellating Silicon Valley, what is the step to make sure citizens (enterprising attorneys) can go up against the colluding goliaths? Maybe the step is, half the country leaving these platforms. I like twitter as useful immediate approach to world news, but I rarely peek on Facebook any more except local neighborhood groups.
We need to stop this. It is as if in the early 20th century the phone companies would cut your calls if you mentioned supporting the right.
Where do you find Bill Mitchell?
You just don’t understand how delicious Silicon Valley appendages taste to congressmen.
Hi Yaelle,
In Google, type Bill Mitchell. His twitter page is at the top of the results.
https://twitter.com/mitchellvii
Now remember, even though Twitter has a popup asking you to Sign In. All you need to do is click outside that box and it will go away.
I never sign up to watch Twitter. Once you’re in, you can freely roam across the Twitter-sphere, if you will.
I just changed my search engine to Duck Duck Go to avoid google.
Thanks for the twitter link, found him. Is there anything else he puts out, or just tweets?
Yes, Yaelle, six days a week he produces a video conversation with a variety of political operatives — each of whom has a great personality and there’s quite a bit of serious fun on his shows.
Within his twitter feed you will find various links to his latest YourVoice America videos. I think Bill prefers you listen to the Periscope video streams because he gets better connection with his audience. And there’s a payment mechanism where people can award “hearts” to the show during the broadcast which earn him some money. Each heart is worth a penny or less, I understand.
Personally I don’t like the periscope because I don’t have Android on my PC and I don’t care to listen from my mobile phone.
What I prefer to do is to find his videos on Youtube. Usually you can find videos that are two days old on YouTube, which is fine for my needs. On my PC, I use a program to convert the videos to audios. Now the videos are 700 MB to over a Gigabyte in size.
I have a high speed connection so downloading is not an issue for me. I also download the audio to a SanDisk MP3 Player that I ca clip to my pants as I have a walk around the neighborhood.
To find his videos, on your search engine, type: bill mitchell site:youtube.com
One final option is to download his podcasts (of those same videos) to your PC directly from the Spreaker.com site.
Or we can be the capitalists we pretend and incentivize new competitors?
**********
We can do both... as a monopoly Alphabet can attack a startup from 10 directions at once and it will not survive. I grew up in an IBM family and worked in the Bell System, These monopolies (along with Bezos’s Amazon) need to be broken up.
“At some point dont the internet backbone companies become similar to utilities?”
They are.
YES YES THIS IS THE ANSWER. More Regulations. YES, I will vote for You, that is the answer, Firstly saying CONSERVATIVES must do this is STOOPID, Secondly, there is that first admendment thingy, this guy is a MORON, This is a LEFT WING Moron trying to suck CONSERVATIVES into a Liberal idea. Well it did not work.
KS presents a very compelling argument, as usual. Still, I still need to be convinced that Google, Twitter, and Facebook are really monopolies, and I need to think some more about possible unintended consequences of breaking them up.
I agree. This is the way the system should work. I use Safari browser and DuckDuckGo instead of Google. Still, we need more options.
