RIGHT now, a British Trident nuclear submarine is gliding deep beneath the waves, primed and ready to launch a devastating strike if the worst should ever happen.
Our nuclear subs operate in the depths of the ocean, where nobody can detect them, and are always on alert to respond to the threat of a nuclear war.
Trident sub commanders keep in contact with the surface as much as possible, but they're relatively cut off from Britain when on deployment.
In the event of a sudden and unexpected strike, the sub crews may have no way of knowing exactly what's happening back home.
But whenever they fear the worst, or need to check in on us, it's thought that they tune in to Radio 4.
The radio station is the UK's most reliable, and is the one which is used as the national broadcaster in times of war or disaster.
Even if every other radio station has been shut down, Radio 4 will continue to broadcast right up to the bitter end.
This has led to the claim that the station acts as a means of checking whether everything is still hunky dory back home.
All of the submarines are famously issued with a "letter of last resort", written by the prime minister and detailing what to do if Britain is devastated by a nuclear attack.
If sub commanders can't contact anyone through their usual channels, and if Radio 4 isn't broadcasting for a set amount of time, then they have no choice but to assume the worst and open their letter.
Trident crews never read the letters, but a sub commander faced a scare in 2004 when Radio 4's Today Programme mysteriously went off air for 15 minutes.
Caused by a fire alarm at BBC HQ, the radio silence reportedly put our patrolling nuclear submarine on alert, even though the downtime only lasted for a few minutes.
The Ministry of Defence has an understandable policy of keeping hush about Trident protocol.
However, the usual reliability of Radio 4 means it's a good way to test whether Britain has been attacked.
On that cheery note, we recently told how one estate agent had released a bizarre guide detailing where in the UK you can buy a home to survive a nuclear attack.
We also recently revealed the chilling parallels between the events of the cold war and the events of 2017.
So, when every military and high tech communication around the world is cut off, they tune into NK channel 4. Snort, snort, snort.
I wonder if a copy of “On the Beach” starring Gregory Peck is in that letter.

Doug Dalgleish & I wrote about Trident procedures for war in our 1984 book “Trident”.
One of them i2 198 kHz. If you know about radio, you’ll know why. BBC has cut way back on shortwave (stupid), but can still be found by Googling it.
CBC (Canada) can be found on 6070 kHz.
Others to try for BBC are: 11770, 11810, 5925, 5975, 7345, and 9915. Times and propagation allowing. Best at night.
Even so, I doubt this article. A VLF or ELF channel seems much more likely Somewhere from 9 kHz to 50 kHz. Longer waves penetrate to deeper depths. (Yes, radio DOES penetrate seawater a little bit.)
Probably based on a deadman switch concept. As long as the signal is still there... Fine. If it drops off... Well...

The frequency for Radio 4 is twice per day.
Unless of course it is served an extra large portion
of cruciferous vegetables or a lot of bulky grain.
Its amplitude modulation is 7,669,932.0001 Tetracycles.
This is also the exact frequency necessary to trigger
the exploding penguin on top of your television set.
Not true. military has had ultra low frequency communication capability for generations.
I hope those subs don’t rely on the media for an “update”, with all the fake news and satire, the crap COULD hit the fan (SHTF).......NOT GOOD!

My sweetie was a sub-guy. He’s told me before that they had to keep radio silence while on patrol, but they were always listening to what was going on top-side. If it suddenly became silent, it would be ‘assumed’ that we’d been nuked & they would launch their weapons.
Not true. They can be detected. Not easily, but they can be detected.
My Penguin has Not exploded,,,Yet.
A submarine commander may use civilian broadcasting (or a lack thereof) as a check on the state of the world above. But I very much doubt it plays any official role in their procedures.
So that is what happened to my penguin when I took it to England.
“Well, boys, I reckon this is it — nuclear combat toe to toe with the Roosskies. Now look, boys, I ain’t much of a hand at makin’ speeches, but I got a pretty fair idea that something doggone important is goin’ on back there. And I got a fair idea the kinda personal emotions that some of you fellas may be thinkin’. Heck, I reckon you wouldn’t even be human bein’s if you didn’t have some pretty strong personal feelin’s about nuclear combat. I want you to remember one thing, the folks back home is a-countin’ on you and by golly, we ain’t about to let ‘em down. I tell you something else, if this thing turns out to be half as important as I figure it just might be, I’d say that you’re all in line for some important promotions and personal citations when this thing’s over with.
