Do you remember the Navy/Marine Panther jet that when taking off, bounced off a house? He was using NW to SE runway and crossing over NW 27 Ave did not get enough altitude. Hit a 3 bedroom house(minor roof damage).
After bouncing he went around and landed safely.
Added note: Amelia Earhart Air Field is on west side of Navy/Marine Base and RR tracks(Hialeah).
The Opa-locka was originally “Miami Municipal Airport in Opa-locka” , mentioned in the Herald.

Don’t know about any roof adjustments from landing gear.

I know CG Air Miami moved from Dinner Key to opa locka I believe in around 65
Only Navy I knew of was the Blimp Hangers but the pool and O club may have been at the Naval Base South of Opa Locka air.

After church on Sundays in 40s were picnics at Dinner Key, watching Pan Am Clippers to/from Cuba & South America, touching the large globe. inside the Terminal.
The Blimp hangers were in the Redlands. They burned down.
A small canal ( running East to West was South of Opa-locka)
They say the gear was up on the panther.
I was born 1953, Miami, moved to Lauderdale in 61, after Army-Signal/ Helicopters 58-63. Did drag races at Amelia in 50s.

What can I say, In 69 I was 7 years old. I just remember the pool East side of the airport, on Lejuene road, we used to get invited to the pool by the base.

What year? I remember a plane going down on 36 street. He couldn’t make the runway. Clipped one bldg. and a few caught on fire

That is a lot of overkill, left over from the days of bad car maintenance. I’ve got the jumper cables, and my car came with the compressor and their version of fix-a-flat instead of a spare. Other than that I have never needed anything else on that list in more than a quarter century on the road. Even with accidents. Just a lot of wasted weight and space.

I think it was at the field that GOYAKLA is referring too.

I kinda remember stories of new pilots to CG Miami air wanting to put down at night at the wrong strip.Especially comping in over Le une

Go my curiosity up so I have a call into a pilot that was there when I was. He loved his sauce so if there was an o club he knew about it.

Thanks

RD is that you??

Weird happenings while searching the web.
21 September-—1956
Grumman company test pilot Tom Attridge shoots himself down in a Grumman F11F Tiger, BuNo 138260, during a Mach 1.0 20 degree dive from 22,000 feet (6,700 m) to 7,000 feet (2,100 m). He fires two bursts from the fighter’s 20 mm cannon during the descent and as he reaches 7,000 feet (2,100 m) the jet is struck multiple times, including one shell that is ingested by the engine, shredding the compressor blades. He limps the airframe back towards the Grumman airfield but comes down at almost the same spot where the first prototype impacted on 19 October: 1954. Pilot gets clear before jet burns, suffers only minor injuries – investigation shows that he had overtaken and passed through his own gunfire.[248

To us it was Opa Locks airport. My father use to go their and fly hand built gliders off of the blimp hangers. As I said, it was a long time ago, I just remember swimming at the pool and only assumed it was an o club. I might be mistaken it was an o club. I just remember the pool.
BTW goyakla is my uncle and he can give you lots of info concerning early days of Miami.
I was born and raised in Hialeah, now living in Hollywood

Yes he sent me a link to some great stuff . Some of the planes I worked on at CG Air were in them.
Also shots of the pool you referred to.
I have a message into an old bud from the day to refresh my brain on the O club.
I was the bartender for the CPO club after noon and occasionally at the E club after that was built in a vacant space

Does Southern Bell ring a bell for you guys ?

I too went through a spell of flat tires and the Fix-a-Flat just doesn’t cut it. I wish I had a tire plug kit. I’ve got the compressor.

Basic tools are also a must.

I was able to replace my serpentine belt and the burned out pulley on the side of the road in 45 minutes. That included calling a cab to get to an auto parts store and back.

And even more basic.

A paperclip.

I’ve hot wired my own car at least three times when the keys were lost or the ignition broke with just a paperclip. Not to mention the vehicles I didn’t own.
