Not a non sequitur, IMO. It shows the power that cops have.
Sometimes the cops are justified, other times not so much. In this case, DD is wrong, but perhaps there is a better lesson to teach them instead of putting them out of business. In the case of the diner, it sounds like the cops were wrong (We are above the law and if you complain there will be hell to pay.)

If he uses that as some social justice warrior BS and isn’t fired, then DD is wrong for not firing him.
And I believe franchises are required to follow certain rules, no? If someone refused to serve a minority because they know someone who had been injured or killed by a member of that minority group, you can bet the worker who refused would be gloriously canned and a huge donation to BLM and free lifetime donuts would be given to them.
