Wasserman Schultz Defends Keeping Staffer on Payroll While Under Federal Investigation

Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Fla.) had no qualms about keeping an IT staffer on her payroll even while he was under federal investigation.

House Capitol Police opened an investigation into Imran Awan and four other Democratic contractors in February. Despite every other member of Congress severing ties with those staffers, Schultz continued to keep Awan on her payroll, even after his House IT privileges were revoked.

Schultz only stopped paying Awan in July, the day after he was arrested for bank fraud at Dulles Airport while attempting to flee to his native Pakistan.

When Awan’s arrest story first broke, the nervous Wasserman sent out spox David Damron w/ the usual Democrat-in-trouble BS: “Mr. Awan previously served as a part-time employee but his services have been terminated. No charges, evidence or findings from the investigation have been formally shared with our office, so we cannot comment on them.”

Official documents, court records and multiple interviews suggest the Awan crew may have engaged in government fraud, tax evasion, bank fraud, extortion, bankruptcy fraud and insurance fraud. More alarmingly, money (our tax dollars?) could have been funneled overseas.
