The Senate moved unanimously to block President Trump from making appointments during the August break this evening. Democrats had said they'd make such a move after reports emerged that Trump was considering replacing Attorney General Jeff Sessions during the recess.
The Senate agreed to hold pro forma sessions throughout the recess. This procedure was also used to block appointments during the Obama administration.
Worth noting: the announcement was made by moderate Republican Lisa Murkowski, who split from Trump over health care. The Senate also made a slew of confirmations and passed several measures before shutting down for the summer.
Another update: The Senate will not hold any legislative sessions until September. Mitch McConnell had previously intended to delay the break until August 11 to allow the now-stalled health care plan to move forward.
The liberals cheer this, but that's who the GOP Republicans would rather please anyway. Disgraceful. The swamp is showing an outsider what happens if he/she tries to run for President.
Backstabbing bastards.
Maybe Trump should drop a MOAB on the Senate and do us all a favor.
Fine by me. Trump has the upper hand as long as he has his 65 million supporters out there. His enemies are just postponing the inevitable.
One only needs to look at the video of Mitch McConnel when the Republicans took control of both houses, he was aghast and visibly shaken at how they had won and with who. That is why this is happening in the Senate.
Mitch McConnell is a TRAITOR to the American People!
Where were the republican leadership? McConnell? Cornyn?
I just love the two party system
TRUMP....v....Uniparty
The beltway pigs know POTUS is about to poopcan their precious obamacare subsidy. So this is just more petty games from them in response.
I’m beginning to think that Trump’s only option is to form his own political party now and invite any loyal Republicans who wish to join him.
I think he could destroy both the Republican and Democrat parties with some careful strategizing and a few good rallies. This business of pretending that the Democrats and Republicans are two opposing political parties is getting tiresome. There are the Globalists and the Nationalists, that’s all there is to it.
The president did not approve their “law” therefore it is not a law and is meaningless. There are three co-equal branches of government and the senate is only half of one branch.
Trump could tell the senate that they can’t take a crap for a year. That does not make it a law and the senate could still crap when nature stirs them, although I would agree that those losers should have giant anus screws with locks to prevent cheating.
They don’t call it the Surrender Party for nothing.
There is none...It’s all UNIPARTY...
Conservatives are going to have to accept the fact that it’s going to take action from everyday Americans to thwart Washington...
Bloodless or bloody, it’s going to come to that....
In all the time since my first vote for Ronald Reagan, I have NEVER let a Republican on my ballot go without my vote...until Marco Rubio.
Days like today make me proud of that abstention.
Didn’t they keep the Senate in session to prevent
President Bush from making some appts?
Republicans are now as bad as Democrats. At least the evil Democrats don’t eat their own. God, please punish these people.
Who are the two who didn’t vote?
This is getting absolutely disgusting.
The Senate making themselves President?
We have to start removing the weasels with the Amnesty Senators
Corker, Hatch, Heller and Flake in 2018
Graham and Alexander in 2020
Murkowsky, Hoeven and Rubio in 2022
This country is heading toward civil war and we have the military and the military command. This could get very bad but we will crush the resistance. Praise Jesus.
