Quebec Immigration Minister Kathleen Weil will be among the officials giving an update on the influx of new asylum seekers making their way into the province this morning.
She will be joined by Public Health Minister Lucie Charlebois and local MPs Marc Miller and Emmanuel Dubourg for a news conference in Montreal on the provincial and federal governments' next steps in dealing with the issue.
Montreal's Olympic Stadium was made into a shelter to temporarily house the asylum seekers Wednesday. Weil has said it's believed 70 per cent are Haitian, who may be leaving the U.S. in fear they'll be deported come January....
.....Though official numbers for July have not been released, the provincial organization tasked with helping asylum seekers estimates that 1,174 people crossed into Quebec last month, compared to 180 people in July 2016.
Weil said it became clear there was an increased number of people crossing the border illegally was when the province started having trouble finding new temporary housing for those making their way to Montreal.

Here's the message... If you want to immigrate to Canada, go to Quebec. They have free housing, free money, and a lot of other free stuff and even if you end up collecting welfare, it's probably 10 times more money than you would make staying in Haiti or picking agricultural crops in the United States. Come one, come all to Quebec.
In 2 years Canada is going to be very pi$$ed at “dreamy” Fidel Junior.
I just wish all those libs libs will keep their promise and move to Canada. Quebec should legalize marijuana as an added inducement.
A US asylum seeker by definition must a US Citizen. If you aren’t a US Citizen, you can’t go to another nation claiming to an asylum seeker from the US.
Hey. This could be a blessing. Do to them what Castro did to that idiot Carter.
And these are dirt cookie eating Haitians. The bottom of the Caribbean barrel. Good luck, Canada.
70 per cent are Haitian,................ No problem, in Quebec, they will do fine, same language mon-su-ear, as John Wayne would say.
Can we donate any money in order to help their plight?
If you fled from a catastrophic earthquake in Haiti in 2010 and you’re still here in 2017, then you’re not a refugee. You’re just an immigrant from a Third World sh!t-hole and shouldn’t be given any special immigration status.
Looks like ANOTHER border wall will be forthcoming and necessary plus that wall will be MUCH, MUCH longer than the wall on our southern border.
These idiots should also remember that if they FAIL to get asylum they’ll be sent to their home country ,not the US . Canada should tell these Bums to get stuffed anyway
Just stay out of Quebec City. Montreal can have them all.
I’d put a turnstile at customs. Every ahab that goes through gets a nice crisp hundred dollar bill.
I just wish all those libs libs will keep their promise and move to Canada. Quebec should legalize marijuana as an added inducement.
Ha ha canadia, enjoy
They are not coming from Haiti. These people were allowed in the US on some sort of humanitarian exemption. They are worried that the exemption will be rescinded. Obviously they don't want to return to Haiti; hence, why not Quebec? Cold in the winter, but still better than Haiti. Maybe they can get jobs tapping maple trees .
As a funny side note, while I was a Marine officer serving in a UN unit, I had a Canadian commanding officer. He was a nice, quiet, solid sort of officer but he made it plain to me that he fully expected the US to invade Canada.
I was surprised and amused until it was obvious that he was serious - he really believed that the Pentagon had active plans to seize Canada and soon.
I did my best to make him understand that as far as I knew, Canada was a huge pile of ice and snow and a few fishing lodges and not really on our dinner plate. He passionately disagreed, so I asked him "does that mean we have to take Quebec too?". He said "yes".
I told him "if that's the case, we aren't coming - they're your problem".
He laughed and we had a pretty good working relationship from there on.
And the poor Haitians don’t speak real French, either, it’s Haitian Creole.
I’m referring to their status in the U.S., not Canada. They are fleeing to Canada because they fear that the U.S. is going to rescind their “special exemption” status.
Cold in the winter? If the dire prophecy of poped Al Goerz is true it’ll soon be hotter than Haities in Quebec.
