WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s endorsement of legislation to restrict and reshape legal immigration is based on some shaky assumptions, such as the idea that low-wage green-card holders are flooding in to take jobs from Americans.

Trump swung behind a bill from Republican Sens. David Purdue of Georgia and Tom Cotton of Arkansas, calling it “the most significant reform to our immigration system in half a century” if made law.

A look at statements about the bill Wednesday:

TRUMP: “The current, outdated system depresses wages for our poorest workers and puts great pressure on our taxpayers.”

THE FACTS: That doesn’t reflect the weight of recent economic research.

It’s like just about everyone, esp the GOP get up each morning ready to trash Trump. Where were they during the past 8 years when the lazy imposter, was in office.

Trump makes us all look sick, lame and lazy. The man is a dynamo of energy. Trolling everyone.

These tweets bring out the real friends and foes alike.

John McCain shows his true colors.

Let the Obamacare disaster crash and burn. Remove the subsidies, let them all eat it.

Fakest of Fake news.

Any and All countries have an Inalienable right to decide who may or may not enter their country for any reason or no reason at all.

But, that doesn't fit with their Communist "Internationale" way of thinking that their are no borders or countries.

I don't care. Unchecked immigration is changing the culture of the country to become Venezuela, and it has to stop.

Who am I going to believe, Trump or the AP, such a hard choice. A guy who wants to help the US or an anti-American fake news outlet, really tough.

John McCain shows his true colors.

He's been showing those colors for decades. For some reason it's been ignored. He's played the "disabled veteran" card for so long that no one has looked at his true colors.

Remember when AP fact checked Obama’s lies re: “$2500 premium deduction”, “keep your plan” and “keep your doctor” and”you tube video killed our ambassador”?

Me either.

Fake News AP.

"President Donald Trump’s endorsement of legislation to restrict and reshape legal immigration is based on some shaky assumptions, such as the idea that low-wage green-card holders are flooding in to take jobs from Americans."

Of course we all know exactaly what the problem is.... Welfare pays WAY to much in this country...

There is no way that welfare should pay a living wage to able bodied people.... If you eat, then you should work... Exception's for the old and truly sick...

Who you gonna believe? The AP, or crumbling boarded-up buildings on Main Streets from Scranton to Bakersfield?

Donald Trump is dumber than a door knob if he thinks the US will lower the immigration quota and reduce the population growth rate to a negative number.

Using current numbers at the CIA Factbook:

Birth Rate= 12.5 per 1000
Death Rate= 8.2 per 1000
Immigration Rate= 3.9 per 1000

Population Growth Rate= 0.81%

One at a time:

TRUMP: “The current, outdated system depresses wages for our poorest workers and puts great pressure on our taxpayers.”

THE FACTS: That doesn’t reflect the weight of recent economic research.

Their statement "Many economists dispute a major study, cited by the White House, that claims low-skilled immigrants hurt wages" attempts to negate this large study with a vaporous "many economists". Sort of like "Sources who don't want to be identified." Of course immigrants depress wages and dry up the work opportunity for the poor. A major study is not even needed to understand this self-evident fact.

TRUMP: “The RAISE Act prevents new migrants and new immigrants from collecting welfare, and protects U.S. workers from being displaced. And that’s a very big thing. They’re not going to come in and just immediately go and collect welfare. “

THE FACTS: Over 50 percent is a stretch unless you define welfare in its broadest terms.

The actual number doesn't matter. An immigrant taking public and social service monies has not paid into the system and is getting free benefit at the expense of our own citizens. Even one is two many, but the numbers are actually huge as even the AP admits.

TRUMP: “For decades, the United States … has operated a very low-skilled immigration system, issuing record numbers of green cards to low-wage immigrants.”

THE FACTS: He misrepresented who many immigrants are.

The AP's attempt to fog over the numbers by including some immigrants that are highly skilled does not change the fact that the majority of them are low-skilled and get low-wage jobs. Every one of these jobs that goes to an immigrant is a lost opportunity for an American citizen -- regardless of the skill levels.

They could only come up with three specious arguments. Nice try AP, but fake news does not change facts.

Exactly. I wrote in to my bank’s CEO about the constant barrage of negativity spewing from AP on a giant monitor as you had to wait in line.

He phoned me back to tell me he has turned off AP. I went to the bank the other day and the channel still says “AP” but no “news” shows—just reverts to a slide show about the bank—so as it should be!

I also wrote to Dunkin Donuts about their giant monitors spewing CNN filth. I did get less of a response on that one.

One thing I am sure of is that President Trump is smarter than you. However, I will give you some credit for surviving so long on FR as a conceited, liberal troll.

If the AP says it, it’s a lie; so this means Trump is good to go.

Trump should simply state that, as of certain date, ALL immigration will stop unless the current system is changed. He has the power to,do,so.
