RUSH: Now, on this White-House-is-a-dump business, Ive never been to Trumps golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. The story is at TheHill.com: Trump has reportedly denounced his White House digs, telling members at his Bedminster, New Jersey golf club that the White House is a real dump. Sports Illustrated has also written the story.
I just can tell you this. I was at the White House, Kathryn and I were at the White House on March 23rd for about five hours. We arrived at five p.m, in time to see a meeting that Trump was having with The Tuesday Group, a group of moderate Republicans in the House. They were trying to push across the line the first House health care bill, which went down the tubes that night. We got the sad details actually at dinner. Priebus and Bannon walked in. It wasnt over at the time they walked in, but it wasnt looking good.

Anyway, before we sat down and had dinner, Trump gave us a tour of the White House and the residence. I had been there before, and I didnt quite know how to handle that. Ive been there a number of times but I dont think President Trump knew that. And so when he said, Rush, have you seen this? And of course I had, no matter what it was he was showing, I said, Never with you, sir. And he remained enthusiastic.
But heres the point. Wherever we went, particularly in the residence, when he was showing us the Lincoln Bedroom and the hallways, throughout the entire structure, he kept telling us how shocked he was as how luxurious the White House was. Now, the general consensus opinion going around, Well, hell, look, Trump is a gazillionaire. He lives in a gilded penthouse on Park Avenue or Fifth Avenue. Hes got gold everywhere. Thats what gilded means, those of you in Rio Linda. And the White House doesnt have a lot of gold around it, and so forth. So, yeah, somebody with that kind of lifestyle, the White House might appear to be a comedown.
But he didnt say anything other than how luxurious it was and he pointed it out, pointed out various construction things, the art on the walls, and he explained how presidents get to choose what art they want from the archives. And I made mention of the fact the Lincoln Bedroom looks entirely different than the last time I saw it. When I first was in the Lincoln Bedroom, it was a Lincoln museum in there. It was stunning.
The Lincoln bedroom that I saw back in March, there was nothing in there except the Gettysburg Address that made it anything linked at all to Lincoln. I can tell you why that is. The previous occupant had decorated it that way. The point is Trump never referred to it as a dump. He was proud of it. He kept telling us how luxurious it was and how surprised he was at that.
I can imagine with Our President being OCD like he is, he is experiencing the same feelings...can you imagine after the O’s left??? EEEWWWWWWWWW....
This is Our National House and I would just bet by the time that Our President leaves Our House it will look much, much different...there is so much history that can be put into each room, and Melania just has that talent...
Trump may have not said it.
But people here have commented on the smell and rattiness of some areas, etc.
It is old.
Is the actual Gettysburg address in that bedroom or just a copy. I wouldn’t trust it to visitors at the WH. Must be a copy.
Or if he did say something along those lines, being a builder, bet he was referring to leaky plumbing, bad roofing, cr@ppy wiring, stuff like that. I could see how that sorta thing would get his goat.
I remember posting some pics of the Press room that were close up when they got locked in because of an intruder. It is only the press room but someone commented about the door. LOL
Yes, crappy construction would probably get to him.
I bet the place has mold, too.
Weren’t the White House rooms completely fumigated and deloused, and the urine-and-excrement-stained carpets replaced, before President Trump moved in?!?
I believe the last president to describe the White House as a dump was Harry Truman . . . then he had the entire structure gutted and rebuilt.
I’m not big on government spending but could get behind renovation and restoration of the White House wherever necessary. It’s a national symbol and a national treasure, it deserves no less.
Yes, I would rather they spend it on the WH than stupid grants like DHS music grant about being kind to muslims music BS
FLASHBACK: OBAMA WHITE HOUSE INFESTED WITH COCKROACHES, VERMIN, MOLD
The mold could be why people here who have visited the WH say it smells.
Photos of the White House Gutted During Its Truman Reconstruction
I doubt he said that, too-I know people out here who live in and run businesses in remodeled cabins, barns and other historic structures 150 yrs old and more-and if the structure has a state-issued designation as an historical place, all remodeling and repair has to keep to the historic era of the place-it can’t be altered-costly, but it sure looks good-and a restored one room 1830’s stone or wood cabin on a couple of acres sells for $130,000 and up, too...
My Brit neighbor told me that castles 1000 yrs old and more in Scotland and England are remodeled, retrofitted with heat and A/C systems, modern kitchens, state-of-the-art plumbing, etc, with loans from the National Trust and the owners’ money-the descendants of the original families live in a lot of them and the others are owned by noveau riches who have money to spend on trying to be nobility. If that can be done, I’m sure pres Trump can update the WH while keeping it all historically correct-after all, the pres is a builder-he knows what he’s doing...
Oh I am sure they were.
I believe it does get occasionally renovated when necessary. Most the time during August when the president is on vacation
Unfortunate that all that history had to be ripped out, but it was plainly necessary -— the structure was seriously compromised by age and the weight of a top story added on. It was not going to last. Thanks for the great photos. My favorite story from the renovation was that they wanted to break out a chunk of the exterior walls to get that heavy equipment you see in the pix in. Truman forbade it, and they dismantled the equipment and reassembled the equipment inside.
Not to mention asbestos.
