Opinion: Why people like me still support Trump
The Washington Post via The San Francisco Chronicle / SFGate.com ^ | Published 10:31 am, Tuesday, August 1, 2017 | Gary Abernathy, The Washington Post

HILLSBORO, Ohio - The most gratifying responses I receive via email, telephone and old-fashioned letters are not from readers who agree with me, although those are appreciated. The ones I like most are from readers who do not support President Donald Trump but say I've helped them better understand those who do.

"I read your column on the Washington Post's op-ed page today, and I have been yearning to understand some things about support for Trump."

"This liberal continues to want to better understand the perspective of the other side, in hope that the gulf in the American political landscape can be bridged, because it seems that the extreme polarization will not be tenable for long."

"As a person who did not vote for Donald Trump and finds it frightening that so many of my fellow citizens chose to do so, I have been trying to get an understanding of his appeal."

"Thank you for your article in the Washington Post. It addressed many questions that I, an 'East Coast elite snowflake' have had about the Trump supporters. We wonder if and why people still support this president."

Those are just a few among many. These writers are sincere and passionate as they go on to explain to me why I am wrong. But people across the political spectrum have a hunger to understand those whose views seem the polar opposite of their own.

This sincere yearning for understanding is in contrast to the steady diet of divisive programming from too many cable news outlets. Depending on which channel they watch, viewers know that certain programs will dependably spend an hour bashing Trump with the most catastrophic hyperbole, or else blindly defending him while suggesting that anyone who disagrees is un-American.

He has been a public eff up this week, but stories that matter such as the Awan bros, go unreported. I live in a world where the media lies to me.

Typical leftist tactic. When your ideas and candidates are rejected, claim that the other side doesn't know what's good for them and blame external factors for promoting the very divide that was created by leftists to begin with.

If Hillary would have won, there would be none of this understanding the other side, no HuffPo tours in the heartland. They would be ramming their collective leftist agenda up our butts without KY.

I support Trump because I don’t want to be raped and murdered by an illegal alien, or a Muslim or Mexican. I particularly don’t want my head sawn off. I don’t want to be jailed for not baking a cake. I don’t want to be governed by the fascists who now govern France, Germany, Italy, and Britain.

I wish your post could be read by every single American over the age of 15.

I live in a world where the media lies to me.

The only way for them to tell the truth is to admit that the people they support are treasonous criminals.

Sounds like the media needs to do an expedition to fly over country to investigate.

Hope they have their passports and vaccination’s in order.

The author, Abernathy, wrote a lot of sweet nothings about understanding each other; but right in the middle of it, he wrote a couple of sentences that nutshelled the piece:

“I like that Trump is a game-changer, a disrupter, a practitioner of what I see as “crafted chaos.” Our stale system and its corrupted processes are in need of disruption.”

That is it! Add to it that Trump owes no one. This, too inflames the feudal system DC has become; and it even more greatly endears him and his family to me.

Same here - still sending the occasional donation (getting lots of requests and only respond to the ones that are for him vs. RNC/Ryan, etc.).

Opinion: Why people like me still support Trump

Because he's still infinitely better than the alternative.

I live in a world where the media lies to me.

In times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act.

Hang onto that, I do every day. Tell the truth. Be revolutionary.

Oh, and F**K the lying liberal lamestream media!

Ditto.

Trump is trying to govern in a place where everyone is against him. And he's not wilting, shrinking, or backing down from the fight.

He needs our support now more than ever.

Because we trust him and he does what he says he will do.

Because, EXACTLY LIKE THE FOUNDING FATHERS, he placed himself, his family and his fortune at risk for attack and injury from the insane demons on the left for embracing our beliefs publicly and in the best of Trump style, LOUDLY...I need no greater proof of his honest intentions. Quite seriously, he is at greater risk than the founding fathers given the demon-possessed insanity of the left.

Because he is awesome. Yes, I said it. He's a role model for success, for perseverance, for hard work, for just about everything anyone looking for a role model to win at life can look up to and follow.

And this is from me, who laughed before that famous Trump speech where he first spoke out against the illegal alien invasion. I said "He's a fart in the wind" and ignored him. He didn't let me ignore him for long. In fact he won me over.

And now he seems our greatest hope after Christ in American politics.

Pray for President Trump. We are blessed yet again in America with a true champion who fights for the people.

Trump has been in office less than a year.
He is in no way responsible for the sorry state of the culture or the country.....THAT is the fault of the Media, Hollywood and establishment politicians.
No matter what fault we find in Trump, he errs on the side of what’s right for America and we will NEVER hate him as much as WE HATE THOSE RESPONSIBLE for the mess he’s trying to clean up.

Trump is doing just about everything I wanted him to. And he's done it in the face of never ending media hatemongering. Something that the average republicans would wilt from in less than 30 seconds. trump is a man of courage doing what america needs. Go president Trump.
