Ironically, it also would have been a “leak” if Scaramouche had possessed the foresight to tell the reporter that his comments were on background.
In other words, he wanted to leak to the reporter about a leak!
But unfortunately, the putative leak exploded in Tony’s metaphorical face, sorta like when you strike a match in the presence of methane that’s leaking from a cow’s hind end.

Trump could have just fired Reince on his own; Reince reported to Trump, not to Scaramucci.
All that was accomplished by hiring Scaramucci was that the news was dominated by things other than Trump's agenda for a week.
