Seattle's Income Tax Brings Out the Crazy in People
Americanthinker.com ^ | 7-31-2017 | Kenneth H. Ryesky

By unanimous vote, the Seattle City Council has now enacted an Income Tax ordinance imposing a tax on "high income residents," i.e, those whose annual incomes exceed $250,000 ($500,000 for joint filers).

The new legislation is largely the work of Councilwoman Kshama Sawant, an unabashed leftist and redistributionist who was elected on the Socialist Alternative party ticket, and who was a moving force behind Seattle's ill-advised $15 per hour minimum wage.

[Kshama immigrated from India to the United States, ostensibly to improve her economic situation. She went on to further her education, submitting her PhD dissertation in 2009. It is certainly fair to ask how this venture was underwritten.]

Kshama is only accepting $40,000 of her $117,000 annual salary, declaring that figure as "roughly the full-time take-home pay of a Seattleite."

After paying taxes, the remainder of my salary will go to a Solidarity Fund to help build social justice movements. Throughout the year I will be making donations from this Solidarity Fund to causes such as workers' strike funds, and environmental, civil rights, and women's rights campaigns.

Some flashing red lights here:

Firstly, just what is this "Solidarity Fund" and who administers it? Is it commingled with Kshama's regular bank accounts, and if so (and even if the excess funds are placed into a separate account over which she herself has signatory authority), are we to depend upon her self-control for assurances that she does in fact live on $40,000 per year? Where is the transparency in the Fund's administration?

The people of Seattle voted and now they have the government they deserve.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

I guess lots of Seattle housing will hit the real estate market soon.

Two things:

1. When a small two bedroom home in Ballard goes for $900,000, $250k a year is not “rich”.
2. Until the voters of THE ENTIRE STATE vote to legalize income tax, I don’t think municipalities nor counties can legally levy an income tax.

Washington is a no-income-tax state.

Like we need someone from India telling us how to conduct our business. If she doesn’t like it here, she can take her ass back to India.

Unconstitutional and given an 1984 state law, illegal. The lunatics are obviously running the asylum in Seattle.

Sawant is a big-time hypocrite and psycho, her husband is a multi-millionaire developer at Microsoft.

I lived nearly a decade on the outskirts of Seattle. Enjoyed the mountains, hiking, fishing, hunting, camping. I’d go downtown maybe once a month for shopping and people watching. I use “people” very loosely here. Whatever they were, it was very entertaining at times and made me appreciate the mountains even more.

First, you wipe out all jobs. Then you chase off everyone who earns income. Finally, enact a hefty carbon tax to eliminate most energy.

That is all it will take to drive out the riff raff and turn Seattle into a retirement mecca for rich liberals and their illegal alien man servants.

Does Seattle have a city income tax as well? If they do, you can be sure that they'll enact a surcharge on high earners who don't live in the city but work there.

Next will be the continued exodus of businesses to the suburbs. Let the drain-circling continue.

Can’t wait to see how many move to the burbs

Local control. If the folks don’t like it they can recall or vote them out next time

If she’s donating to a charity, isn’t that something she declares on her own returns?

It’s STILL income

I spent about a month in Seattle back in the late 1980s. Even back then, it was a nice place to visit and nowhere I would ever want to live.

Drop a few neutron bombs and it might be livable.

"Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard." - H. L. Mencken

As an ex-Seattleite I might point out that $250K isn't all that "wealthy" in that town. The money they want is in Bellevue and points east. And it's there for a reason.

May be against state law but there is nothing unconstitutional about it

“immigrated from India to the United States, ostensibly to improve her economic situation.”

India’s economic problems are not due to a lack of smart people, but exist because the dumb Asian Indians who love leftist ideas run most of the governments there.

Immigrants, kindly leave your lousy leftist ideas behind in your lousy leftist country of origin.

wrong.

the WA supreme court has udged multiple times that an income tax is a property tax and thus violated the Washington State Constitution’s requirement that all taxes be uniform upon the same class of property

Seattle should be walled up and sacked. Out side of the city limits the puget sound area is really awesome.
