Germany urges EU countermeasures against U.S. over Russia sanctions

BERLIN (Reuters) - New sanctions against Russia proposed by U.S. lawmakers and which could harm European firms violate international law and the European Commission should consider counter-measures, the German economy minister was quoted on Monday as saying.

"We consider this as being against international law, plain and simple," Brigitte Zypries told the Funke Mediengruppe newspaper chain. "Of course we don't want a trade war. But it is important the European Commission now looks into countermeasures."

The German government and business leaders have said the new sanctions passed this month by the U.S. House of Representatives could prevent German companies from working on pipeline projects that they say are essential to Germany's energy security.

Good. Screw the krauts. I am sick of them. Two world wars and they are still acting like a-holes. Angela Merkel is from East Germany.

Seems to me this is a good way to find loopholes and bugs in our various trade deals.

Germany needs fossil fuel from Russia? I thought Germany was going to rid itself of fossil fuel.

I do believe the Germans have a “stupid” gene, hardwired into their DNA.

I guess they failed to learn the lesson during the first two go-arounds ...

That’s OK - if they decide to go for the trifecta, we’ll use nukes.

So much for Congress wanting cooperation with the European allies.

This is about natural gas....more than anything else. Just about all of the winter heating resource...is natural gas out of Russia (been that way since the 1980s).

This whole Russia thing STINKS.

Besides “evil Putin” meddling in pur elections, our entire government and deep state says we must confront an aggressive Russia that threatens Europe on all fronts - Ukraine, Latvia, Estonia, Georgia, Poland, etc....

But - lo and behold - the Europeans themselves don’t care about confronting Russia. They seem to have few fears.

We are being told bold-face LIES to push this ridiculous anti-Russia narrative.

Thanks, pepsi. Here I was thinking natural gas is a fossil fuel. Thanks for correcting me. Germany needs natural gas and NOT fossil fuel. And the Germans NEED natural gas from Russia so they don’t get cold in the winter. Can’t rely on wind power in the winter. And, can’t rely on U.S. natural gas either. And, as for climate change, Germany is all for the Paris Agreement except in the winter when it gets cold. Ditto NATO. When the Russians were in the Fulda Gap, Germany met its NATO commitment. But, now, Russia’s not a German problem. It’s an Estonian problem or a Polish problem or a Ukrainian problem. Germany can’t upset Russia because it gets cold in the winter.

“I thought Germany was going to rid itself of fossil fuel.”

They planned to do just that. That is what the carbon tax and AGW scheme was about. To have the US pay for subsidizing the EU energy bill.

AGW was/is a Global scam to transfer wealth away from the U.S.

It’s a little more complicated, but you are essentially correct.

Europe and Japan are fossil fuel importers. If the DEMAND for fossil fuel is restrained, it will be cheaper. So, Europe and Japan win AND lose by Paris. They win with the lower cost fossil fuel they import, but lose in that they too have to kick in money to the U.N. Maybe they break even. In any case, being self-righteous about climate change is cheap for them.

The U.S. is one of only four countries that have both highly advanced economies and SUPPLY fossil fuel. (The other three are: Canada, Australia and Norway.) We simply lose. We lose both because of restrained demand for our product AND because we’re supposed to kick in money.

The Paris Agreement sanctioned the burning of the entire world’s proven reserves of oil, coal and natural gas over the next 30 years. While the advanced economies are to cut back, the developing economies are allowed to increase, and those increases more than off-set the reductions.

BOTTOM LINE: In terms of climate change, it doesn’t matter who burns fossil fuel. So, the Paris Agreement is about money, not climate change.

congressional hubris and overreach

not smart

especially since the Euros are richer than us, have little debt, and make stuff that people want to buy.

Would someone please have this read into the congressional record? This is what happens when congress attempts to usurp the powers of the Presidency

I doubt Germany is going to be able to force the EU to do this. Many countries hate their North Stream 2 project.

Well, that is also part of this funny story. The US changed the law....we can now sell natural gas. And there are US gas ships out there. Some Germans think this was done to force the Europeans into buying US natural gas (25-percent that is true). But they are the ones who whined about Russian meddling in US politics, so the US said there are consequences, and the europeans whined that they weren’t willing to accept those kind of consequences.

I agree with you. Whether Germany buys from us or from Russia, having us as an alternative source gives Germany bargaining power.

ALSO: A pipeline from Azerbaijan via Georgia via the Black Sea to Ukraine or Romania, and another pipeline from Saudi Arabia to a port on the Mediterranean would also be good.

Would any investors dare to build a pipeline through Georgia? What if the Russians organize something again and “accidentally” blow it up?
