In a sign of how fast the Islamic State is shrinking, McGurk last month visited northern Syria. I called on him Wednesday, at his small whitewashed office on the ground floor of the State Department, to assess the future of ISIS and the worlds most unconventional nation. McGurk is an optimist, long-term, despite the chorus of skeptics in Washington about extremism, Iraq and Syria, and U.S. foreign policy in the volatile Middle East. The interview has been edited and condensed. McGurks most chilling answer was when he talked about how many ISIS fighters are still alive.

I personally like Brett. He has been involved in the Middle East a very long time.
This war with ISIS is not over yet, but it is clear they are loosing badly. A good thing.
Fairly long article, worth the time to read. Very factual.

That is a very good article
Thomas Wictor on Twitter is the best non-government expert on Iraq & he says the same thing. ISIS done.
He also says the Iraq military is very good.
I’m glad you liked it. It is interesting that very recently some news of this conflict is popping up in the US Media.
In this case it is the fact that McGurk is giving an interview to someone who is not driving the article toward a conclusion, only asking questions and reporting his view correctly.
I saw no evidence they were steering the interview. Which I find refreshing.

That is a very good article.

“Im very concerned about Idlib. Trends apparent for some time culminated over the last couple of weeks, with the dominant Al Qaeda movement taking the main border crossings and populated areas. We have to make sure Al Qaeda-linked fighters cannot get in and out. We are going to have to work with the Turks and others to degrade this presence. This is not something thats spreading. But, within Idlib, Al Qaeda is working hard to take the reins of power.”

Al Qaeda *cannot* be allowed a foothold at the main border crossings, or, quite frankly, anywhere.
totally agree
