‘’Managers in these areas have been told to ‘think the unthinkable’, consider closing A and E Units and maternity wards and rationing certain operations”

But wait, this is already being done......but they still cannot afford the costs in certain areas, so they are being told to ration even harder. Why, oh why, do people in this country think they will get the level of healthcare that we used to get, when the care is under total Government control?? Rationing has already happened here to some extent, with HMOs and Obamacare. Yet, there are naive people who think it will get better when the Government controls it. The dumbing down of the citizenry has hit critical mass.

Somehow the title got changed from the one at the source.
Somehow you have listed yourself as the author.

How do you suppose stuff like that happens?

Unfortunately, what the republicans want is pretty much the same as what the democrats want. That’s why Trump won, and why the republicans will probably lose a lot of seats in coming elections.

Too many think government run health care will be just like Blue Cross Blue Shield except the government will pay for it and it will be cheaper without the profit motive.

What they don’t understand is this. With BC/BS, you have a contract that obligates BC/BS to provide certain services. The government, OTOH, has no such obligation but it does have a budget which provides for only so many heart operations, hip replacements, etc., per year. Wouldn’t be too bad if the government did a bottoms up budget that predicts and supplies a proper number of treatments. But, the government uses a top down budget where there is only so much money for just so many.

So if I fart and poop comes out

The technical term for that is "shart".

Do you think the taxpayers of the UK, as represented in the House of Commons, acting through the Minister for Health, have a right to say how much they can be taxed in a year to pay for other people's hip replacements?

Anyone in the UK who wants a hip replacement and can pay for it can get it tomorrow.

The fight over public health services is a fight over "who pays".

Yes. They can buy extra health insurance. It is still available in the U.K. They can pay for private insurance on top of their extra 15-20% taxes for the NHS. They can also go to India to get cheap health care. Reference: the Marigold Hotel movie. It is ALWAYS about the money.

Yes to everything you said, but what needs to come out when people attack "rationing" or "death panels" is, are they talking about something that applies to everyone or are they talking about limits on access to OPM (other peoples' money)?

We, as a society, are very, very confused about this. If you want a hip replacement, great! Go buy it.

If you want money from me that could send my kids to college instead, then you damn well better believe I want my congressman and senators to have something to say about your weight, your age, your smoking habits, and your rehab potential.

Personally, I find it offensive that my weight, age, smoking habits and rehab potential are ANYONE else’s business. Period. That info should only be of interest to my health insurance provider and me. But we have already traveled down the Socialist road that allows people to call others out in ‘righteous indignation’. The Collective is all important. But, when we, the hard working wage earners of the country, are required to pay for everybody else’s healthcare, the freedom of lifestyle choices/free will, go out the window. Sad that our country, which was created on the premise of freedoms for the individual, has come to this.

If you want me to pay for your hip replacement, don’t you think your suitability for it becomes my business?

I wouldn’t ask you to pay for any of my healthcare. Wake up and realize how far down the ‘single-payer with death panels’ road we already are. I want to return to the time when our health and healthcare were under our own control. I admit that is a tall order, but I am probably lots older than you are and I remember when Americans would never consider the behaviors and rhetoric that are now everywhere and are actually acceptable. Neither the behavior nor the rhetoric are acceptable to me.

Insurance companies already ration care here. The demand for medical services will always outstrip society’s ability to pay for medical services.

The question is: who do we want to ration our care? Private companies, or the government?

Prior to obamacare, health insurance plans imposed annual and lifetime limits on how much was spent. So if you were in a catastrophic scenario, you could be SOL under a private insurer plan.

Of course, banning coverage limits has been one of the factors driving skyrocketing premiums.

You didn’t read what I wrote.

If you are paying for your hip, your BMI etc is none of my business.

If I am paying for it, it becomes my business.

The fight over public health services is a fight over “who pays”.

Not sure what you are getting at but if it is who pays then the next question is who can afford it? The average worker after putting in a life of paying taxes is screwed because he cannot afford the cost of a hip replacement. So who pays????
