Our only possible salvation from the AI robots is if Islam takes over and takes civilization back to the dark ages.

I think this was something of a theme in Dune where great monarchical families had agreed to limit research into AI for fear of it taking over. These families all had very Arabic sounding names.

It’s what sci-fi writers have been predicting for as long as I can remember. We are already bent out of shape when our technology fails us

To say It is not a possibility and not controlling that particular outcome would be a mistake.

There is no such thing as true AI. Computers will always be
zero’s and ones programmed to act in such and such a way. What people are scared of is the loss of freedom and individualism as more aspects of life become regulated in the name of safety and uniformity by power mad do good bureaucrats.

The most frightening thing about AI is that the Nation with the least reservations about using it first, will immediately jump out to an enormous advantage over everyone else.

Like flying cars from the 1950’s, AI since the 1960’s has been trying to cash checks for gazillions with not a penny in the bank.

As a computer scientist ever since the 1970’s I’ve been watching out for the promised AI revolution and have yet to see it.

Whatever you tell the program to do, it will do. If you program it to take over the world, even if you don’t know that’s what you’re doing, it will take over the world.

Eventually, the western world will need to find other motivations to live other than with ‘work’ always being the number one reason.
This will be a very difficult sea change in priorities.
Some will refuse to change, with work remaining the top priority for means of survival. Many unemployed will be crowded into the few remaining unautomated job categories.

The most fortunate of this group will have carved out a lucrative niche for themselves. They will do something not yet possible for a machine system to do.
Somewhere down the line, the value of human contact will be ‘rediscovered’ and seen as a most valuable commodity.
