There’s no denying it… President Trump has been shaking up the television ratings game ever since he came down the golden escalator. And now, with outrage (or fauxrage in many cases) being the top menu item on the TV menu, MSNBC seems to be reaping the rewards. And if this isn’t a blip on the radar, it’s truly phenomenal. For the first time in the network’s entire history, they finished the week number one in total viewership in prime time, not just among the cable news channels, but for all cable networks.
For the first time in the networks 21-year history, MSNBC finished the week as the most-watched cable network during weekday prime (M-F 8-11pm) in total viewers. According to Nielsen, MSNBC ended the week of July 17-21 as the #1 cable network for all weekday prime, averaging 2.34 million viewers, ahead of FOX News at 2.25 million. MSNBC was previously #1 in cable news in weekday prime during the weeks of May 15, 2017 (behind TNT) and September 3, 2012 (behind USA) among total viewers, but this was the 1st time MSNBC was #1 among all of cable.
Additionally, MSNBCs 7pm through midnight lineup was the #1 cable network in total viewers.
There’s no denying that MSNBC is rising in numbers, but the next obvious question is… where are they coming from? Fox slipped a little bit, but what really seems to account for the shift is a combination of two things. The first is a partial collapse in CNN’s viewership and the second, when you look at the total number of all news consumers, is that there are new viewers entering the prime time news market. People who might previously have been watching a reality show or some prime time network offering are checking in on the news.
Friday provides a pretty good example of why the total week went to MSNBC and (I can’t believe I’m typing this) Rachel Maddow did most of the heavy lifting. Here’s the Friday chart from TV Newser.
It can’t be sugarcoated. Rachel Maddow took a wrecking ball to the competition. Her show was through the roof on Friday night, pulling the network’s total numbers up significantly and probably sealing the deal for the week. Credit where due, I suppose. I’ve never even found that show to be watchable for more than four minutes before I wanted to jam a pencil in my ear, but this is a capitalist system and the market goes where it will.
One other note of interest is that the decision by MSNBC to add some Republicans to the lineup doesn’t seem to be hurting them. On Friday, the new 4 o’clock show from Nicolle Wallace was doing much better than her predecessor. She even managed to edge out Jake Tapper in total viewers in that slot. Could some of this new surge in viewership be coming from crossover conservatives and right leaners checking out the new offerings? We’ll need a few months of sustained data to be sure, but something is changing. There’s no denying it.
It’s the “Safe Space Network”
Dunno why the left is so unhappy about the Boy Scouts.
When Obama spoke at the Jamboree, didn’t the Scouts chant “O-ba-ma! O-ba-ma!”?
Trump is GREAT for ratings!
This is good news. It’s evidence that the left is dispirited, and is looking for a place where they can hide from reality and recreate the echo chamber they had when the liberal media went unchallenged.
I’d rather die than watch the Madcow or anyone on MSNBC. But I don’t watch any of them, no more FoxNews for me, either. Let the Murdoch boys ride it off a cliff.
Deplorables watch less and less on tv since there is no balanced, honest media.
The remaining majority are carriers of the derangement syndrome.
The market craves an honest and balanced media.
Lots of wimpish snowflakes and wackos out there.
I just heard a woman admit in public the other day her only “news source” was MSNBC. I can’t imagine what it’s like in her head (vast empty spaces?), but there are apparently millions more zombies like her.
The Murdoch boys are getting what they want. Faux Snooze being liberal and not in first place!
They are doing it without O’Reilly on Fox.
I agree. Rachel Meadows starts her show with a 10 to 15 minute monologue that is worse than anything you will here on NPR. She speaks slowly and repeats herself over and over and takes forever to get to the point. It is torture. I'm not talking here about her politics. I'm willing to listen to/mock/laugh at all sides, but that woman is just painful to watch.
fox news committed suicide. good bye to bad rubbish.
I didn’t like him much, but FOX is not the same without their anchor-position talent, that being O’Reilly.
The Murdoch boys have been destroying the network, and they are, deservedly, going down. Not that I wish well to MSNBC or CNN, but I don’t wish well to the Murdoch boys either.
BTW, I predicted the decline of FOX months ago. I don’t believe a week makes for long-term win, but, the signs are there against FOX. Bring back Ailes (yes, even in his casket he’ll do better than the Murdoch boys).
Because of FR and other great news sites, I rarely watch Fox anyone. I already know everything they’re going to tell me. On occasion they have a legit breaking news story but rarely.
The news biz has changed dramatically in the last five years. Most Trump voters get the bulk of their info online and are not swayed in the least by the lemmings running these news organizations.
Nobody watches “O’Donnell.” This is so much BS.
I’ll be glad to help Fox get their mojo back. All they have to do is to cool it with their MSNBC-Lite Trump-Russia coverage. It’s boring. It’s hurting Trump. To h-— with them.
Us conservatives spend most of our time working and creating wealth.
Must leftscum spend their time trying how to use government power to steal the fruits of our hard work.
Well Trump is getting the job done so we mostly are getting back to work.
The leftscum are in a panic and mostly don’t work so they are watching leftscum media in hopes of validation and stealing our livelihoods.
Hence the ratings.
“Its the Safe Space Network
Right. The left is so desperate they are reaching out to Madcow for comfort.
A few times I’ve checked in on her raving about Russia over the past six months. Gosh are they clinging to any little hope.
I’m guessing that Fox’s self-destruction didn’t hurt MSNBC’s ratings.
