Britain to ban sale of all diesel and petrol cars and vans from 2040

As part of a government strategy to improve air quality, Britain is to ban all new petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2040 amid fears that rising levels of nitrogen oxide pose a major risk to public health.

The commitment, which follows a similar pledge in France, is part of the government’s much-anticipated clean air plan, which has been at the heart of a protracted high court legal battle.

The government warned that the move, which will also take in hybrid vehicles, was needed because of the unnecessary and avoidable impact that poor air quality was having on people’s health. Ministers believe it poses the largest environment risk to public health in the UK, costing up to £2.7bn in lost productivity in one recent year.

Ministers have been urged to introduce charges for vehicles to enter a series of “clean air zones” (CAZ). However, the government only wants taxes to be considered as a final resort amid a backlash against any move that punishes motorists.

“Poor air quality is the biggest environmental risk to public health in the UK and this government is determined to take strong action in the shortest time possible,” a government spokesman said.

“That is why we are providing councils with new funding to accelerate development of local plans, as part of an ambitious £3bn programme to clean up dirty air around our roads.”

You have to read the whole thing to grasp the insanity. How come the ecoweenies in the USA haven't latched on to nitrogen oxide pollution?

NOx is part of the German vehicle emissions trouble.

US has stricter NOx standards than soon to be muzzie You-rope.

Smart move by the Brits; the “Asians” infesting their island are terrible drivers. So it’s best to eliminate cars bfore they become the majority of the population.

All of the native Brits will be dead by 2040...

And pollution will have nothing to do with it.

In 2040, camels will be the major form of transportation.

One more reason I drive something offensive to the environmental activists, especially the European flavor - an affordable V6 sedan that burns gasoline.

It is a long time to 2040.

Enough time for someone with brains to reverse that decision.

Because their economy will collapse.

No nation can be prosperous when their energy costs are multiples of the rest of the world.

What are they planning on doing? Importing camels?

(Or whatever it is that Pakistanis use to get around...)

Options do exist, of course.

Top contender?

Nitrogen oxides(NOx) react with volatile organic compounds(VOCs), in the presence of sunlight, to produce ozone aka smog.

I'd love to see the breakdown on that 2.7 Billion in lost productivity. Sounds like a total fabrication to me.

Last December, I was in London and admittedly, the streets are busy. Thousands of those little London taxis are clattering about - most cars that you see on the streets are diesels. For all that (and the red buses too), I don't recall ever seeing or smelling exhaust fumes. I was expecting to see some sign of this problem and repeatedly looked for it, but it just wasn't there demanding notice.

Whatever is really behind this, it's not air quality.

“One more reason I drive something offensive to the environmental activists,”

I just go out and burn a couple of old tires every day or so.

Sounds like a good way to take themselves back to the middle ages.

Back to the future.

Leftism is pure insanity.

In 2040, camels will be the major form of transportation.

Maybe not, if they're used for other purposes!

Ever hear the joke about the westerner in a remote area of the Middle East? He asked the local men around a campfire what they do for a good time. The locals said we use Layla over there, pointing to the nearby camel. So the next day the westerner thanked the local men for the tip, saying Layla gave him a hard time at first but he was able to have his way with her and enjoyed it immensely. Local says "but sir, we ride Layla into the nearest town for the women!".
