Trump is not going to be “Watergated”. First of all, Nixon had the votes in the Senate to remain president. He left for the good of the country. Trump will stay for the good of the county.
Second, Nixon never fought back. Trump will.
Third, Trump is going to put a stop to this. Current law does not allow an open ended investigation. If the special prosecutor wants to go beyond his authorized investigation into Russian influence in the election, then he must request permission. He has ignored this law, and will be brought up short. How . . . only Trump know. But he will not allow this to go on . . . and on . . . and on.
I thought the reason Nixon resigned was because his fellow Republicans in the Senate came to him and said that the votes were there to impeach him.
As far as current law not allowing an open ended investigation, I saw Jonathon Turley on Fox News yesterday saying that Mueller’s mandate is worded so vaguely that he can investigate almost anything he wants.
But I did hear on Mark Levin yesterday that Levin’s reading of the Constitution allows unlimited pardon powers to the President, even pardoning himself. And that he doesn’t have to wait for any charges to be brought. He can exercise his pardon power whenever he wants to.
That's how I see it too. First move had to be a sign that Mueller was outside his box. Next move has many options, and they are not all mutually exclusive.
Letters to Rosenstein from Team Trump, letters from Congressional Committees, who question DoJ (Mueller is part DoJ, just not subject to "regular supervision"), a public education campaign about the scope of Mueller's authorization, outrage about Mueller's with hunt - and make it personal. If Trump has dirt on Mueller, let Mueller know it's coming out. All the past failures, "Anthrax Mueller" comes to mind. Surrogates can go on a reputation-damaging rampage even without being told to do so, and that is coming.
Demand a completion date from Mueller. Put Mueller and Rosenstein under a microscope on this project.
What evidence do you have -- aside from media reports based on the same kind of unnamed "sources" -- that he has done any such thing?
President Trump would be a damn fool to even think about firing Mueller based on these reports from media outlets that he has justifiably derided as "fake news" for months.
