It is a surgical procedure after all.

For the record, White County has only 25,000 people. Sparta was the home of Lester Flatt. The population is 96% white Not surprising. If the people being given the option of vasectomy were, to ANY degree, nonwhite, we would currently be seeing huge numbers of civil rights lawsuits.

Why am I a little uneasy about this?
Because there are shades of eugenics in it?
Logically, it makes sense. Children whose parents have spent time in jail are more likely to go that route themselves. But in practice, voluntary becomes mandatory, and the government would be deciding who gets to have kids and who doesn't.
If the program could be kept small and voluntary, I would support it. But I don't trust it to stay that way.

I can think of a hundred people who wouldnt exist if their daddies had had this opportunity when they were young and stupid. I can think of a lot of people who would be alive, if not for the offspring of thugs.
There are no solutions, only trade-offs.

Exactly. Could they use the planet to justify this?

a generation ago, folks in Africa were starving due to lack of food and dying due to lack of medicine.
So vast amounts of food and medicines were shipped to help these poor folks out. It worked quite well!
So today the people there are merely starving due to lack of food and dying due to lack of medicine
