I don't think I've ever read a presidential interview quite like the one Donald Trump gave to the New York Times yesterday. Going over the transcript, there were times when I thought I was reading a David Mamet play. (You can read the full thing here.)
Because speculating about the Russia investigation is this city's favorite hobby, the rest of the media are following the Times lead of focusing on Trump's remarks about Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, acting FBI director Andrew McCabe, and special counsel Robert Mueller. How can Jeff Sessions remain in his job, cable news anchors ask, when Trump says he wouldn't have appointed the former Alabama senator had he known Sessions would recuse himself from all matters relating to Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election?
Trust me: Sessions will find a way to swallow his pride.
Obsessing over Russia misses the larger meaning of this interview. I was amazed at the breezy way Trump reveals his thoughts on, well, just about everything. Have we ever known exactly what a president is thinking in real time, about the people he meets, the situations in which he finds himself, the decisions he makes? Has there been as wild and brash and colorful and outrageous a character in the Oval Office since Teddy Roosevelt? And how is it possible to contain, to embarrass, to trap a man as shameless as he? Every time the reporters think Trump is cornered, he demolishes a wall.

The slimes will twist it into hate filled rhetoric and innuendo.
How did Trump not know who Rosenstein is? Didn’t he appoint him? LOL.
What I love about Trump, is what you love about all leaders. He doesn’t consult with others before he gives an answer, because he has the right answer. Sure, he might make a gaff here and there, rarely, but he takes them all on.
I was quite young, but I vividly recall Kennedy taking a lot of heat early on. Then over time, young people got comfortable, and even were proud of him, by the way he answered questions from the press. When he died, our innocence as a nation was lost.
Trump will grow on his naysayers, over time, because he is consistent. He demands high standards in his people. He has high energy, and he expects the same. He will NOT fire Sessions, and in fact Sessions might rise now to be even better than he would be, but if Sessions offers to resign again, he will accept it.
I’m having trouble opening the link.
Don’t buy their crap. These people do not have any problem with Trump per-se. Indeed he was a media darling up until the day he announced his campaign.
They are just having their stampy-foot tantrum because the Democrat lost and the headlong march into a New World Order has been at least temporarily halted. At some point I imagine even they will get tired of it.
That is hilarious, isn’t it?
Other than the slimes, is there a transcript of the interview?
He "ends up" with Rosenstein? Trump acts like he is a victim of circumstance. Trump is the President and fire Rosenstein and Mueller.
IIRC, it was Haberman who said that, in her interview with Trump, she was shocked at how relaxed he was, not at all stressed. Seemed to be thoroughly enjoying himself in the job...having the time of his life.
Haberman is one dumb...
Sessions had recused himself from Hillary investigation and faced official Dem demands to recuse himself from Russia before Rosenstein’s name was sent to Senate. Trump is the only one surprised by what happened.
Rosenstein needs to be keel-hauled.
But he needs to fire Mueller first.
Trump is a man comfortable in his own skin. He knows what he is doing. His opponents are all weak, nervous, tight-assed little boys and girls. So much fun...!
What gets me are these guys, Fox News in particular, who have all the great advice, about being on message. They would want him to talk about bringing jobs to America for like five days straight, then talk about Obamacare reform, then talk about this. Hey” Trump has too much energy, and he can joggle more than one ball in the air. He doesn’t have to have someone talking to him about being on message.
The GOP and Sessions in particular are not helping. He’s spending a good part of the time dealing with the idiotic Russia thing. Time to put it to bed.
You tell Mueller, he has like 30 days to come with something or he’s being fired.
If he really wants to make heads explode, and reach the low information voters, he can make his work as President a reality show, and allow a camera crew to follow him around all day, showing him in action for a few hours every day. They can sit in on his meetings, listen to his phone calls, see him yell at people, observe him in charge and understanding the issues, being a boss. It would be awesome!
I even have a name for the show: President Trump Today. Put it on youtube, unless one of the networks wants to pick it up.
More winning!
Yup!!!
