SIERRA VISTA — The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Fiscal Year 2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which will affect several Arizona military installations including Fort Huachuca.

The bill, approved on Friday, includes $103 million that will fund replacing the wings of the A-10 fleet and $17.5 million in upgrades to the EC-130H fleet as well as funding for “critical missions” at Fort Huachuca.

Amendments to the NDAA — initially offered by U.S. Rep. Martha McSally, R-Ariz. — plans to extend a National Guard suicide prevention program, improve the U.S. Army Network Enterprise Technology Command (NETCOM) security, address the shortage of Apache helicopter pilots and address gender double standards in the military. McSally also hopes the amendments will consolidate the Army’s communications network into a single network that is secure, integrated, and standards-based — addressing security vulnerabilities.

“These defense initiatives will provide our military with the tools necessary to complete their missions and I will continue to fight for them all the way through the legislative process,” McSally said in a press release.

Locally, the bill — when officially approved and signed by President Donald Trump — will dedicate $30 million for a ground transport equipment building.

According to McSally’s office, NETCOM currently monitors 60 percent of Army Networks and is responsible for the entire Department of Army networks.

Nonprofit Fort Huachuca 50 solely and exclusively promotes the economic welfare of the Sierra Vista area by supporting the continuing development of Fort Huachuca, according to its website.

The organization’s president Kevin Peterson, said through a press release the bill’s funding is critical for the installation’s operations and “are fortunate to have Congresswoman McSally advocating for our local defense assets in Congress.”

“We also thank her for her amendment requiring the Army Staff to report on the plan to consolidate networks that will increase security and better support commands,” he said.

Tanja Linton, Fort Huachuca media relations officer, said the installation “stands ready to execute the provisions of the NDAA once it is passed, the President signs it into law and funding becomes available.”

“We do not comment on pending legislation,” she said.

Kelly C. Schibi, McSally’s communications director, added this is the third NDAA bill in which McSally “successfully fought for crucial funding for the A-10, Compass Call and Fort Huachuca.”

Since Fairchild Industries, which WAS located on Long Island, NY, where the A-10 was originally designed and built, what Arizona company is lobbying to get the manufacturing contract?

And why Fort Huachuca, and not Fort Polk, in Louisiana??

dear sand,

re: fort huachuca patch ... cliche’ military patch use, when a proper definitive statement sdhould be used, is not impressive, nor informative.

Rephrase your answer so this ‘pfc’ can digest it, in a satisfied manner, in his taxpayer’s brain.

That’s what, was left to us, (STRATCOM), when we went from being a FORCECOM Post, to being a bunch of losers in a TRADOC Post.

Becoming a TRADOC Post we Lost the big STRATCOM (CALLED the Electric BASKETBALL) Patch on Huachuca Mt, 2 Tank BNs, the 11th Sig Group, a full service military hospital, the North Gate. the troop auto shop, the troop carpentry shop, the Class 6 store, 3 foreign liaisons, the O Club, the EM Club, the NCO Club. the MP Bn was reduced to a small detachment, and more,.... I’ve nothing good to say of TRADOC.

Dear Sandrat,

That is a good chunk to be missing.

Now, since you are ‘active’, lemme tol’ ya’s ‘bout the V.A. in Alexandria, LA. They ...do not transport veterans between the V.A.;s, where they have put the specialists and concurrent treatments. Little Rock is the chemo place, Houston is the big everything; ...VAMC Alex does not do surgeries, has no wound care doc or center, no urologist or clinic, the 24/7/365 E.R., has gone to a 10 hour day and no weekends. Not a word from local politicians.
