the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said in a news release. At one point, an officer fired their weapon, fatally striking a woman."
An officer fired their weapon? Am I to surmise that more than one officer showed up but they only had one weapon? Or are the people issuing news releases grammatically impaired?

A better trained journalist would have said the officer fired their AK47 assault Glock.

It is intentional bad grammar related to sex/gender. Becoming more common in the PC world.

that is really atrocious pronoun usage...everybody knows it should have been ‘an officer fired zir weapon’...

I noticed that too. I believe it's another example of 21st Century "journalism" where the reporter doesn't want to be gender specific, as in "his" weapon, or "her" weapon.
More PC BS.
