Over the past generation, members of the college-educated class have become amazingly good at making sure their children retain their privileged status. They have also become devastatingly good at making sure the children of other classes have limited chances to join their ranks.

But if the more well to do and educated folks move into the poorer sections of town to upgrade those areas they scream GENTRIFICATION!
Hoisted on their own Class War petard, eh?
I imagine David Brooks blames Republicans for this ...
I have to agree with Brooks on this one. I am all for Liberals in Portland, New York, and San Francisco being attacked, beaten, robbed, and raped. I think their little Snowflakes would benefit from this Diversity at schools as well.
“As life has gotten worse for the rest in the middle class, upper-middle-class parents have become fanatical about making sure their children never sink back to those levels,”
Amazing how much destruction President Trump has been able to do in six months. /s Come on NYT get your head out of you know where and admit the o was really a 0.
Like I want my area infested with ‘Hood Rats.
The building codes and other regulations make certain that those without the means to afford it, don’t live there. Thus their attendant problems of crime, drugs, crappy schools, and democRAT politicians are also notably absent.
Or did he just think that because he and his ilk voted for a Black Man, the racial polarization of these ultra-liberal cities was forgiven? Like purchasing an indulgence from the Church of Liberalism?
Did this ‘tard take care of his children?
Construction rules were put into place to ensure safety. Those regulations were likely imposed by the self important by liberal democrats who wanted to be in charge of everyone’s life.
Now this moron wants those regulations turned back putting minorities in danger just so they can displace whites.
“...Well-educated people tend to live in places like Portland, New York and San Francisco...”
I live in the countryside, outside a city of 30,000 in Montana.
My neighbors are:
Retired FBI Bureau Chief (He’s not to be trusted)
Retired Astro-Physisit and Astronaut
Plastic Surgeon
Retired Anesthesiologist
Architect
College Professor, PhD in Engineering
Physician and owner of two cancer clinics, one on each coast
Retired Army Colonel
Retired Lawyer
Real Estate Appraiser
These verifiably smart people don’t want to live in any lunatic city!
Not attacking you, artichokegrower, just using your post as a foil against Brooks’ words.
My neighbors are smarter than HIS neighbors.
I imagine David Brooks blames Republicans for this ... <<<<
I will bet David Brooks NEVER visited the parts of Portland, New York and San Francisco that house non-Upper-middle-class.
David Brooks is now full leftist. Essentially an article in support of the concept of “white privilege,” complete with the tacit approval for forced integration of wealthy zip codes with people who don’t understand the point of his columns. He is the worst kind of Northeast Elitist.
He makes a case (unknowingly, ha) for the deconstruction of the education system. And his patronizing of his only “high school educated friend” he recently took to lunch who couldn’t understand the deli menu is absurd. Such a putz.
Yeah...and those who do get a good education do it so they can look down on others ..the essence of his article’s theme. And ...so they can continue to live in a slum where they grew up. Not so they can live in a better place. Sheesh. Projection.
“Leftists complaining about the liberals.”
Typical liberal scenario. Crap your pants. Wax lip-curlingly indignant about the smell. Blame Republicans for it. Demand that others clean it up at everyone else’s expense.
Dante De Blasio and Chelsea Clinton could be the poster children for privilege.
Include me out of your “we”, NY slimes.
Have no idea where Brooks lives, but I’d give a good portion of this months paycheck to see Section 8 housing next-door to it.
