Sam Girod was sentenced to six years in federal prison for making herbal salve without the kings permission, plus $1300 in what are essentially court costs, plus over $14,000 in restitution to his victims. He will also have three years of supervised release, is barred from owning firearms, and is barred from making any product regulated by the FDA. Sam will not be forced to undergo court ordered drug testing.
After a few brief opening remarks, Judge Danny Reeves described the sentencing procedure. Its not a simple nor straight forward procedure. It seemed deliberately complicated, which in the federal government domain can also be interpreted as providing places to hide abuse of power while maintaining the illusion of following procedures.
Judges have enormous latitude in sentencing. The sentencing guidelines include a convoluted calculation. The various counts are grouped by class. Sam apparently had five classes. For each class, points are totaled. Ive seen people play Dungeons & Dragons and the point system is similar.

ridiculous...
Herbal salve? Why should that be a problem?
Herbal salve? Why should that be a problem?
Because drug companies line the pockets.
Crazy. The endless bottomless pit of BS regulations, red tape, and beaurocracy enabled this farcical list of punishments.
Inam guessing the issue is that he SOLD it, as a product and made medical claims. These claims could be “makes your skin soft and supple, reduces wrinkles, etc.
Typical poor journalism, as this article omits substantial facts, and is more interested in selling outrage, than informing the reader of the facts.
Should have called Jackie Chiles
“Girod was sentenced to six years in federal prison for making herbal salve without the kings permission”
That’s clearly not true.
Nonetheless, the sentence does seem disproportionate.
The guy convicted of rioting at the inauguration, for example, got only four months.
Doesn’t seem right that a snake oil scammer should get 18 times more time.
It doesn’t seem right he should get more time at all.
Or perhaps any time.
When one claims to be a “sovereign citizen” and hence can do as they please, they soon find out two things. The state doesn’t care what the claim. Two they will serve time in jail
Drive without a lucense, speed as fast as you want, don’t pay taxes, use drugs and alcohols....all end up in jail or prison
Yup. It’s the old snake oil salesman
Know the FDA agent. They told him he could not claim that the salve cured cancer but he refused to change it.
They did not care if he sold the salve just that he could not make the medical claim.
All the earmarks of Fake News.
You can’t sell a product you make? That comes pretty close to tyranny.
Here’s another blog that details some of the issues (yes, labeling)...
But it’s a pretty obvious case of persecution by the FDA.
I hope friends are figuring out a way to get it to Trump for a pardon. Putting the man in jail for 6 years is just insane.
How so? Here’s a ‘more authoritative’ website if you prefer...
Let’s see - mislabeling, selling a harmful product, and jury tampering. Claimed to cure skin cancer, tumors, and headaches.
Defying a court order from 2013 to properly label the products.
or was it for making false claims?
Correction - witness tampering, not jury tampering.
“It doesnt seem right he should get more time at all.
Or perhaps any time.”
Not sure as I’m not familiar but if he’s saying it cures cancer or whatever it’s, like, killing people at least very potentially.
I have a particular hatred for those who market crap to the dying.
This man may or may not be among those, I don’t know.
