Senators Complain They Don’t Know What The Words In The Constitution Mean

Filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi said that several U.S. senators complained they couldn’t understand the words in the Constitution in a Tuesday interview.

The daughter to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelos filmed several senators, former presidents, and other officials reciting the Constitution for her upcoming documentary, “The Words That Built America.”

“A lot of the senators complained that they didn’t know what the words [in the Constitution] meant,” Pelosi said, according to AXIOS. “Let’s face it: the words are dated. Not to Ted Cruz. To him, it’s poetry. He just went for it.”

Cruz’s 2012 Senate run centered on “upholding the rule of law and preserving the Constitution,” according to the campaign’s website.

The report didn’t list the senators that read the constitution, but the promotional video published by HBO show’s Sens. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, Tim Scott of South Carolina, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, John McCain of Arizona, Ted Cruz of Texas, Kamala Harris of California, and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.

Pelosi also told AXIOS that Speaker of the House Paul Ryan was her two sons’ favorite speaker of the house, an awkward revelation given the fact that her mother carried the gavel before Republicans gained control of the lower chamber of Congress.

The filmmaker has a history working with high-profile politicians. She worked as a producer for NBC on George W. Bush’s campaign plane and worked with HBO ten other times on politics-related projects

Words in the Constitution aren’t even close to a lot of what Senators don’t understand...
A huge, huge number of them do not understand the normal, hardworking, everyday American....

I liked the reference to Ted Cruz and poetry. Any well written document with the kind of historical impact the constitution has, should be poetic and treated as such.

The Greeks and the Romans built a whole legal and governmental framework on rhetoric and oral skills.

The KJV is beloved for many reasons, not least that it is so poetic and lends itself to public speaking.

Liberals feign confusion, as clarity would interfere with their TYRANY.

It really explains a lot once you understand they don’t even know what “enumerated powers” means.

How well do you have to understand something you’re just going to ignore anyway?

That's about the scariest thing I have ever heard come out of Washington.

It should come as no surprise, though. After all one recent President obviously does not know the meaning of the word"is".

perhaps it is because there are too many Lawyers in there. They can twist even the simplest words.

Forget the Constitution. Hell, they don’t even understand the words in the Declaration of Independence. To a Liberal, truth is not self-evident.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated

Secure? Unreasonable? What are the big words here?

and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Oath? Affirmation?

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed

Still not sure which words are too big for even 5th grade intellects to understand...

Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

Inflicted? Is that the one that hurts your meager capabilities?

Like so many political bills, one has to read it to understand what it means, although even the illiterate can grasp its meaning intuitively from their God given rights.

No one knows. The argument over meaning has been ongoing since day 2.

To decide on the argument there is a system of courts and a supreme court.

Google it.
We all have to keep up with new words, slang and jargon all the time.
Works for old words too.
And if that is too complicated we still have those little brick like objects made of paper sheets with words printed on them.

Let's start our English lesson with something simple: "shall not be infringed".

I think the real problem isn't that it is hard to understand. The problem is that it doesn't say what they wish it said so they feign ignorance.

The Constitution: Congress shall make no law ...
Democrat: It depends on what the meaning of "no" is.

Both Rs and Ds understand the words and meaning. They just REALLY want to do something else.

Shouldn’t these idiots be tested on both the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence before being allowed to ruin?

Also..other “professionals” must take continuing ed each year. Why not our leaders?

(...er...run. Darn auto-fill.)
