Senate Democrat blasts 'Obamaphone' over fraudulent findings, complete lack of oversight'

A new government audit finds more than a third of enrollees of the "Obamaphone" program may not be qualified -- among other fraudulent findings -- prompting a Senate Democrat to roundly criticize the program's "complete lack of oversight."

A report released Thursday by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) claims the program, which gives cell phones to poor people, stashed $9 billion in private bank accounts, the Washington Times reported.

The 90-page report was requested by Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Missouri Democrat who serves as ranking Democrat on the Senate’s chief oversight committee and who is a former state auditor in Missouri.

A complete lack of oversight is causing this program to fail the American taxpayer — everything that could go wrong is going wrong," McCaskill said in a statement, according to the newspaper.

"We’re currently letting phone companies cash a government check every month with little more than the honor system to hold them accountable, and that simply can’t continue," she said.

This program needs to end NOW....all of it.

There is simply no reason for some ‘hood RAT to have any electronic communication device that they have not paid for themselves.

And it's more like $1000 a month, with a $6000 deductible before they actually pay for anything

Wasn’t there something in the news a while back about President Obama coming up short 9 Billion dollars in one of the programs? Or am I having a senior moment?

I see no problem with them having a limited use phone with three options: Police, Fire, Ambulance. Phone companies could easily recycle older generation phones for this purpose.

No "200 minutes" of calling per month. No "Internet Access"

They did so well with phones, let’s put them in charge of health.

That is the suckers rate, you know the kind of money productive people have to pay. Ms. Obama Phone is probably not paying a dime other than for a subsidize bus ticket to her Medicaid Dr.

I believe any sane person knowing of the program knows is a total waste of taxpayer money. I know one person who has one who continually “loses” it and gets replacements with no questions asked. I have no idea what she the lost iphones but I suspect she sells them.

Thats only if you have a job...if you are getting the subsidy your plan could be like $400/mo or less.

If you have a job you are paying for yours and for theirs.

Rename it to the Trumpphone and millions of minorities, gays and muslims will refuse to get one, thus saving the taxpayers millions of dollars.

A few other options: Lessons in US Civics, a line to Rush Limbaugh’s daily monologue, and a line to passages of Holy Scripture read aloud.

Senate Democrat to roundly criticize the program’s “complete lack of oversight.”

More oversight6 will not solve it. Free stuff is the problem.

A well known "Industry"! Absolutely no incentive to phone providers to cooperate in detecting fraud. The increasing "Obamaphone" numbers are trumpeted as evidence of a successful program by the Dims!

I think that was the State Department. Maybe there were others though. ;-)
