Well, sadly, I think you can thank Ted Cruz and Rand Paul as well because as I recall, they struck a deal with McConnell not to support a primary against him during his last election.
Of course, now they are out campaigning against the McConnell bill, but when it really could have made a difference, they chose to support him.
