The True Meaning of Socialized Medicine
American Thinker.com ^ | June 30, 2017 | Daren Jonescu

(Spoiler Alert: If you find slavery or infanticide disturbing, you may be too squeamish to read further.)

A perfect crystallization of the full heart and soul of socialized or "single payer" health care is on display in the story of Charlie Gard, a ten-month-old infant with a life-threatening genetic condition, and his parents, Chris and Connie, whose desperate efforts to save their child have been diverted, and finally thwarted, first by the British government and now by an entity with the perfectly Orwellian name "European Court of Human Rights."

The parents of terminally-ill baby Charlie Gard are ‘utterly distraught’ and facing fresh heartbreak after losing their final appeal in the European Court of Human Rights.

Chris Gard, 32, and Connie Yates, 31, wanted to take their 10-month-old son – who suffers from a rare genetic condition and has brain damage – to the US to undergo a therapy trial.

Doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, where Charlie is being cared for, said they wanted him to be able to ‘die with dignity’

Charlie Gard and his parents

So in the name of "dying with dignity," Charlie has been denied his last hope of living with dignity, not to mention his last chance to live in the loving care of his parents, who have obviously put themselves through hell -- above and beyond the hell of watching their child die at the hands of a tyrannically impersonal "medical system" -- to try to save him. Meanwhile, his parents themselves are denied the dignity of taking responsibility for their beloved child's well-being and sacrificing everything to save him, as parents are (or used to be) wont to do.

I can sympathize with the parents, but this is much more complicated than just “socialized medicine at work” here. The minute you put medical care — and the responsibility to pay for it — in someone else’s hands, you’re going to lose a lot of control over the decisions that are ultimately made. This is especially true in a case where the patient is too sick for the parents to just take him home and treat him themselves.

A “health care plan” is not health care.

In Canada if a woman needs expensive prenatal care, it is covered - but she has to wait 9 months for it. So “covered” does not mean available.

Socialism destroys the incentive to improve. And as In Search of Excellence reveals, if you are not trying to improve, you actually are getting worse. Socialism ineluctably degrades quality.

As Thomas Paine pointed out, society “is a patron,” and government “is a punisher.” “Socialism” is the idea, based on cynicism toward society, that the government is above reproach.

Medical testing, diagnoses, care and treatment should be separated entirely from the method of payment for those services.

Does your car insurance supervise coding, paint color and reasonable & customary charges for repairs in the event of an accident?

I worked in both the health insurance industry and in several physicians offices.

The number of employees for insurance paperwork in a medical practice has outpaced the number of nurses, lab technicians and physicians.

Medical insurance carriers used sound actuarial figures to determine risk and premiums. The industry was one of utmost trust and integrity. They were State regulated, but not controlled.

Self funded plans were the best innovation for businesses.

This Obamacare is the death knell for insurance companies. Life insurance is next on the socialists’ agenda.

Trump himself should pay for the trip/medical expenses. Embarrass the $hit out of the limeys/socialists. Then establish a GoFundMe campaign that we can all show our compassion.

if it to help the poor...they why Doesn’t the left promote just give the poor a Government insurance card like food stamps And leave the rest of us that can afford to take care of ourselves alone

But Socialized medicine is not about helping the poor ..because the left is forcing everybody into it ....it about control

From a previous post:
“Charlie’s parents, from Bedfont, west London, raised £1.3m on a crowdfunding site to pay for the experimental treatment in the US.”

Life insurance is next on the socialists’ agenda.

My dad died 40 years ago but I could use some money now and would like to take out a big life insurance policy on him. Surely the democrats will fix it so that his pre-existing condition won't be held against him.

Life insurance is already declining here in the U.S. There are two factors driving it:

1. Years of low interest rates have made it harder for insurance companies to build and maintain adequate reserves to keep them ahead of the actuarial tables.

2. Advances in medical care and other factors have made premature deaths less common. Nowadays people tend to be more concerned about outliving their assets than dying suddenly.

I hate to have to say this, but very little has been said about this "experimental treatment." In the US, almost anyone can put on a white smock and claim to have a miracle cure. And people who do so prey upon the most desperate, people like this couple who would do anything to save their son's life.

If this experimental treatment has some evidentiary basis, and has shown some promise against mitochondrial diseases--and an IRB agreed that it is ethical to do so--then preventing the parents from traveling to the US to participate in a clinical trial is inexcusable.

But if this treatment is snake oil, then every court and the experts involved have made the correct decision. There is no reason to subject a dying baby to snake oil to enrich a quack.

The name of the "treatment" makes me suspicious. "There is a new treatment available which is a nucleoside bypass therapy, which could potentially repair Charlie's mtDNA and help it synthase again by giving him the naturally occurring compounds that his body isn't able to produce." A nucleoside is a basic building block of DNA or RNA, the part also known as a "base." How does one bypass a nucleoside? And synthase is a noun, a name for a class of enzymes, so its use as a verb here is confusing. There is nothing in this description that appears to have a solid scientific basis.

Anyway, this is a sad situation, and I feel for the parents. But I am not ready to condemn anyone--the possibility that these parents have encountered a quack ready to scam them is too strong.

There is a 25% chance that any future child they have will have the same disease. And a 50% chance that any future child will be a carrier.

It happens in the US too. FUTILE TREATMENT LAW. Hospitalized children are not under full Parental Control.

First Do No Harm based on a real story, but done as semi fiction. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyeC9IiFKp

Terri Schiavo is another such case.

Set up your Powers of Attorney, Will/Trust, living wills etc up.

Children are another story, especially ones who have never left the hospital.

I’ve lost 2 children, 1 never left the hospital, lived 33 days, there was no known treatment for the virus he was born with. The 2nd was murdered when he was 16 by a SOCIOPATH for the thrills to see what it was like to kill. My heart goes out to these parents as I know the heartache they are going through.
