Problem is, if the president is merely impeached, nothing happens, he stays in office. If the President is impeached, and the senate convicts, then the president is removed from office and never allowed to hold office again.

[[Trump would resign before conviction...or even impeachment...likely the former. Then Pence could pardon him]]

If he hasn’t been convicted of anythign what will he be pardoned for?

Only by half of the two entities that do the impeaching.

Think of the House as the police detectives getting evidence together then once they think they have enough to prosecute they present it to the AG. If the AG decides it warrants an indictment by the Grand Jury then it goes to trial which would be what the Senate does.

I’m not sticking up for ‘ole Bill but he was found not guilty at trial (by the Senate) so he was never truly impeached. However, just like when Eric Holder was found in contempt, his name was forever tarnished. No coming back from that or erasing it. Well, the left will probably try in 100 years like they are doing now by removing all signs of the Confederate heroes of that era, but the truth always finds a way to surface.

I’m sure you know all this but there are some folks who might not so I figured it was worth the time to explain it fully.

No, just warming up for his run at Prez. And the Dems will welcome him with open arms. They had a candidate who was under FBI investigation; they don't have far to fall.

That’s why Hillary should have been impeached as Sec’y of State (which can be done after the person leaves office). This would have made her ineligible for the Presidency.

"...he was never truly impeached..."

No, Bubba was impeached. He was not convicted.

Correct. My bad. I was speaking historically and thought that Nixon had been impeached. But he wasn't. Ford pardoned him for crimes he may have committed.

The appointed vice President has to be confirmed by majority vote of both houses of Congress.

Funny but that is not what would happen.
If the RATS can find a reason to get rid of Trump, they will make up something to get rid of Pence.
That leaves Ryan President and the RATS would be happy with that.

Next cycle, Ryan gets thrown out on his butt, loose the Senate and House and we start all over again with a Commie running the USA.

A funny joke but really nothing to laugh about.

You are suggesting that the meaning of the word has now changed to include conviction by the Senate. At this point in time you are mistaken, though as an ardent student of our language this is something that fascinates me, watching changes in the language and understanding why the change is accepted.

Were someone to say that Clinton was not impeached, we would think him ignorant. If the House were to vote Articles of Impeachment, they would certainly say that he was impeached. This talk would mystify the plebes as they would not know the difference between being accused and convicted, for in their minds, there IS no difference.

Of course I do not intend to impeach your integrity, for you are a fine Freeper, and a better man than I, and so say all of us!

At least with that Democrat commie president, there wouldn’t be any Russian interference, right?

(wrong)

LOL

That is as convoluted as Netflix’s House of Cards this season.

They jumped the shark and the killer whale this 5th season.

I am 3 episodes from the end and do NOT look forward to a season 6. The season 5 episodes seem to drag on and on with little substance.

impeachment and conviction by the Senate is not pardonable

The only possible action for conviction of impeachment is removal from office. All other charges as a result of removal from office are pardonable.

Thank You skimbell!

Impeachment is the process by which a legislative body formally levels charges against a high official of government.
Impeachment does not necessarily mean removal from office; it is only a formal statement of charges, akin to an indictment in criminal law, and is thus only the first step towards removal.
Once an individual is impeached, he or she must then face the possibility of conviction via legislative vote, which then entails the removal of the individual from office.HEH HEH
