Actually, the Democrat Party is the Big Government[singular] Party.
The Republican Party is subservient to the Democrat Party. If you care to look it up and check it out, Congress was supposed to have passed a law in 1947 making the United States of America a Two Party System. In later backroom deals it was decided that the Democrat Party would be the dominant and the Republican Party would be the servant of the Democrat Party. So with few exceptions, two less than three, this is the way it has worked.
