Before Aida Tseggai could major in biology at Cal State Dominguez Hills, she had to catch up in math.
She passed a non-credit remedial math class in the fall and then was offered a new pathway a for-credit course in college-level algebra that provided extra class time, tutoring and review of more fundamental material.
Such combination classes known as co-requisites, bridges or hybrids are seen as a crucial tool to help hundreds of thousands of CSU students climb out of the remedial education hole in which some feel trapped. Part of a national reform movement, such courses also are aimed at helping students graduate faster.
It saved me time and money, said Tseggai.

Most businesses in this country are sued for turning out defective products. I don’t know why these “colleges” are allowed to continue getting away with it.
I think the problem occurs in high school. According to the OP, the colleges are addressing deficits in arriving students.
Universities and State Colleges should hold the line on standards, remedial education belongs in community adult classes or community college,
Not as long as those student loan checks keep clearing.
I never figured out the value of the classes but this made it worth the read...
“...[the student] said she resents the placement system that tested her without allowing calculators on forgotten material from high school. She remains really annoyed that her college education might have been ruined by one math course.
Its not fair because I worked really hard to get where I am, said Herrera, who is switching her major from biochemistry to liberal studies, with a goal of becoming a teacher.”
I’m not so great at math either. Math needs to be more simpler, but it is complex for some.
Because we need more Affirmative Action illiterate college grads who can’t do basic math.
college credits for junior high school work
no wonder American businesses try to hire so many foreigners
It’s really the K-12 schools that are turning out the “defective products”. Colleges are forced to teach what should have been taught in HS and Middle School because they are graduating people who know next to nothing.
Why didn’t she learn Algebra in 6th and 7th grade like normal people do??
Was going to write similar. How do people even get in a four year( or more) college without a HS education?
My sister teaches math to kids that age in inner city Baltimore. They cannot understand the concept of one-half. Then she can really challenge them by asking them to divide one-half by two. Or multiply one-half by two.
I suspect colleges wouldn’t have enough students to keep their doors open. Just a suspicion. I realize many colleges are indoctrination centers but some turn out productive citizens.
"In this situation, how would you bet?"
"I bet agin' him."
"Welcome to my class."
Yep, that’s the way to up the graduation rate...lower the standards. Pathetic. Stupid and pathetic.
I went back to school after the Army and had to do some “remedial” classes with kids right out of high school. You will not be surprised that these kids were absolutely unprepared for college and not one ended up graduating with me in my major. All of the adult students (many veterans) did just fine.
Back in the old days, the University of California had a remedial English class called ‘Subject A’. You were tested on skills with English and if you didn’t pass, you had to take and pass Subject A before you could take the required English I. There was an extra charge for taking it and you received no credit. As an extra bonus your draft board might expect you to take 15 hours per semester (to graduate on time in 4 years) and since you got no credit for Subject A guys who had to take Subject A twice might find themselves receiving an entirely different education.
“Pathetic. Stupid and pathetic.”
...and the very definition of “liberal logic.”
went to catholic schools never saw the inside of a remedial classroom. : )
