MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The mother of Philando Castile, a black motorist killed by a Minnesota police officer last year, has reached a nearly $3 million settlement in his death, according to an announcement Monday by her attorneys and the Minneapolis suburb that employed the officer.
The settlement to be paid to Valerie Castile will avoid a federal wrongful death lawsuit stemming from Philando Castiles death. The 32-year-old elementary school cafeteria worker was killed by St. Anthony officer Jeronimo Yanez during a traffic stop July 6 after Castile told the officer he was armed. Castile had a permit for his gun.
The shooting gained widespread attention after Castiles girlfriend, who was in the car with her then-4-year-old daughter, livestreamed its gruesome aftermath on Facebook.
Yanez, who is Latino, was acquitted of manslaughter and other charges earlier this month. The jurys decision prompted days of protests, including one in St. Paul that shut down Interstate 94 for hours and ended with 18 arrests.
The $2.995 million settlement will be paid by the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust, which holds the insurance policy for the city of St. Anthony. It requires approval by a state court, which could take several weeks.

Now all Yates has to do is sue Castile’s estate for PTSD...
I predict the money will be gone within two years; three, max.
Considering that the attorneys will get the lion’s share, I say 18 months.
A neighbor of mine died suddenly and left a family behind. The insurance money was used to buy new cars for mom and new motorcycles for the kid...and that’s just what was visible to an outsider...who knows what else it went towards. Within two years, the house was being foreclosed on. Sad really.
Most of these settlements for blacks justifiably killed by police are pure bullcrap (e.g., the gentle giant in Ferguson, Missouri) and should not have been made. The settlement in this article, however, is one that made sense to me. The dead passenger did nothing wrong but, on the contrary, did everything right. The involved jittery cop clearly lacked the necessary attributes to bea cop.

Philandro Castile likely made a bad mistake. When you watch the dashcam video, Castile tells the officer that he is armed, and the officer initially does nothing.
Then the officer (Yanes) tells Castile, “don’t reach for it”, repeated, rapidly in command voice. Then he draws and shoots Castile.
Castile did something. He made some sort of move that the officer interpreted as “going for it”.
The officers screwed up as well. They suspected that Castile was an armed robber. It is on the dispatcher’s tape.
The should have done a High Risk stop. They didn’t. If they had, everyone would have gone home ok.
But, it partly explains the mind set of the officer.
These settlements are intended to save money on lawyers. I ran a grocery store and a black women was trying to steal a ham. My clerk grabbed a broom and stood in front the door with it and would not let her out. Well she wrestled with my clerk then threw the ham down. She got a lawyer sued us and won because the insurance company did not want to pay the legal fees.
Should be Yanez, not Yanes.
Also, Castile’s reactions might have been slowed by Marijuana. He had THC in his system. Yanez said he smelled Marijuana.
I suspect that the danger just did not register with Castile.
He had dozens of traffic stops on his record, and nothing even close to this had happened before.
He could not have been reaching for registration papers, because those had already been given to Yanez.
Maybe he was going for his permit?
Something set off Yanez’ reaction. It was not the mention of a gun. That is clear from the dash cam.
Tragic situation, all around.
I can see why the Jury reached a not guilty verdict. There was plenty of reasonable doubt.
Yes, plenty of reasonable doubt — but I’m glad he’s off the force.
The grieving mother...

CAUTION: NSFW...EXTREME LANGUAGE.
This reminds me that I heard the “gentile giant’s” family settled their lawsuit for $1.5 mil. WTF?? Raise a thug, have him killed while trying to kill a cop, have a city burned down = Profit.
Gives meaning to “worth more dead than alive”
I have a friend whose husband died and she got a $200k life insurance policy. She used $40k to pay down on another house so she could move but other than that had nothing to show for it. And the house was being foreclosed on within 8 years. She paid $180k for the house.
People amaze me.
I can’t escape the feeling that that is exactly what happened. Could be all jittery cop but to me there is more to this story.
Time for Escalade shopping
If my family had named me “Philando” I’d have been on death row by the time I was 17.
Castile replies: I'm not pulling it out. (unstated "I am getting my driver licence which you have asked for")
